REAL 8-7 JUVE: Spaniards Edge Italians In UCL Clashes Ahead Of Final

 

Real Madrid and Juventus will meet in the Champions League final in Cardiff on Saturday – 19 years after the two giants met in a European final.

Alfredo Di Stéfano scored the winner in the first leg in Turin after beating two defenders, the second leg saw Omar Sívori level scores to force a Paris replay. In the replay, Sívori equalised  for Juventus after Rafael Hernández also known as Felo had struck earlier at the Parc des Princes. Goals from Luis del Sol and Justo Tejada sent Madrid through to the next round.

 

2. 1986/87 European Champion Clubs' Cup second round

Emilio Butragueno gave the Los Blancos a 1-0 lead from the first leg but Juventus captain Antonio Cabrini cancelled out Butragueno's strike in the second leg to force a shootout which Madrid went on to win.

Butragueno, Jorge Valdano and Juan González all scored their spot kicks after both teams failed with their first attempts. 

 

 

3. 1995/96 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals

Juventus eventually got the better of Real Madrid after losing out in their past two encounters. Raúl González got the only goal of the first leg to hand Real Madrid an advantage into the second leg but Alessandro Del Piero and Michele Padovano scored for the Old Lady of Italian football to eliminate Madrid.

 

 

4. 1997/98 UEFA Champions League final

A lone strike from Predrag Mijatovic ensured Real Madrid emerged winners over Juventus for the fourth time in five meetings. The win also saw the los Merengues' 32-year wait for a seventh European Cup ended at the Amsterdam Arena, thanks to Mijatovic's goal.

 

5. 2002/03 UEFA Champions League semi-finals

David Trezeguet's away goal kept Juventus in the tie despite goals from Ronaldo da Lima and Roberto Carlos handing Real Madrid a 2-1 first leg win. Goals from David Trezeguet and Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedved was enough to help Juventus overturn a 2-1 deficit in the second leg despite Zinedine Zidane's consolatory strike at the then Delle Alpi stadium in Turin. Gianluigi Buffon saved a Luís Figo penalty before Pavel Nedvěd made it 3-0. 

 

6. 2004/05 UEFA Champions League round of 16

Iván Helguera gave the Los Blanco a first-leg lead but the the Bianconeri levelled the tie in the second leg with a quarter of an hour remaining through substitute David Trezeguet before Marcelo Zalayeta's low shot in extra time settled the tie.

 

7. 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage

The 2008/09 UEFA Champions League season saw the Bianconeri end their 46-year winless streak at the Santiago Bernabeu thanks to a sublime brace from Alessandro Del Piero. Juventus had not won on at the ground in six visits, since a 1-0 triumph in February 1962. The first leg had ended 2-1 in favour of the Turin giants. Goals in either half from Alessandro Del Piero and Amauri were enough to see off a late comeback despite Ruud van Nistelrooy's 66th minute strike.

 

8. 2013/14 UEFA Champions League group stage

The first leg of this tie saw Cristiano Ronaldo equal the record for most goals in a single group stage (eight) with two games still in hand. The Portuguese captain scored a brace to hand his side a 2-1 win and all three points from the encounter and he was also on target in Turin as the Merengues forced Juventus to a 2-2 draw.  He went on to make the record his own in a 2-0 triumph at FC Copenhagen on match day six.
