Real Madrid qualified for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday after they cruised to a 2-0 win over a profligate AS Roma in the second leg tie at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Spanish giants are through 4-0 on aggregate.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opener on the night just like he did in the reverse tie to take his tally to 93 in the competition in the 64th minute before the lead was doubled four minutes later by James Rodriguez.
Roma had better chances in the first half with Edin Dzeko and Mohammed Salah failing to take score.
Dzeko missed a glorious chance in the 14th minute after he was played on by Salah but he sliced his effort wide.
Real responded with Ronaldo who had seven attempts in the opening 45 minutes, but just one of them needed a good stop from Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny in the first half.
In the 50th minute, Salah again missed a third one-on-one of the night for Roma as Džeko stabbed a bouncing ball into his path only for the Egyptian to hit his effort wide of goal.
At the Wolfsburg Arena, Moses Simon made his fifth appearance in the UEFA Champions League for Gent who lost to Wolfsburg 1-0 on the night and 4-2 on aggregates.
Nigerian international Simon led the lines alongside Danijel Milecevic and failed to score in this season’s competition before he was replaced by Kalifa Coulibaly, scorer from the first leg in the 70th minute.
The win saw Wolfsburg become the seventh club to make it through to the quarter-finals of the competition at the first time of asking.
Wolfsburg began the second leg tie on the back foot failing to close the game out just like how they did in Belgium three weeks ago.
The Germans had limited the chances to see off the Belgian champions in the first half but had Andre Schürrle’s 74th minute goal to thank.
