Redmond Confident Of Sharper Saints

Nathan Redmond says Southampton have renewed confidence in front of goal after focusing on finishing during the international break. Only Huddersfield Town have registered fewer goals than the Saints through the first 12 matches of the season, with Mark Hughes’ men having found the back of the net just eight times so far.

Southampton’s poor return in front of goal is not for the want of trying, having registered 173 shots on goal – the fifth highest number of attempts in the Premier League this term.

Redmond believes bad luck has been partially to blame for not scoring more and hopes all the hours spent on the training pitch working on their finishing will pay dividends, starting with Saturday’s game at Fulham, who have the worst defensive record in the top flight.

Redmond told the Daily Echo: “We have done a lot of finishing drills to gain confidence in front goal, but also a lot of crossing drills. “It’s not rocket science but creating chances and scoring goals is probably the hardest thing in football.

“There is a lot of onus on the guys up-front and the guys out wide to do that. Especially the intensity in our passing, the intensity in our pressing and our communication as well. “But we have to do it as a team. We defend as a team and score goals as a team.

“I think we have been a victim to bad luck at some points, but at the end of the day, we are the ones who cross the white line and have to do a job.”
