Liverpool have been paired with Paris St Germain, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade in Group C for the first round of the Champions League. The Reds made it all the way to the final of Europe’s top club competition last season, only to lose to Real Madrid 3-1 on a dramatic night in Kiev.
Their route back to the showpiece game will not be easy after being handed a tricky group stage draw in Monaco on Thursday, the Reds being placed in the same pool as French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Parisians, who boast the world’s most expensive player Neymar and World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe amonst their squad, were also eliminated by Real for last season’s competition, bowing out in the last-16.
The Reds haven’t faced off against the French giants since the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1997, winning 2-0 at Anfield following a 3-0 loss in Paris.
Jurgen Klopp’s men will also have to face off against Napoli, who finished runners-up in Serie A last season, and Serbian champions Red Star, who edged out Red Bull Salzburg in the play-off round.
