My Rep Is On The Line – Stone

Steve Stone says he is under pressure to succeed at Burnley after recently being appointed the Under-23’s manager. Former Newcastle United first-team coach Stone was named as Michael Duff’s successor on November 12 after the ex-Clarets defender left Burnley to take charge of Cheltenham Town.

The 47-year-old from Gateshead has lots of experience as a player to recall on, having been part of Terry Venables’ squad that reached the semi-final of the 1996 European Championships, whilst his coaching CV also makes for good reading.

Stone is now presented with a new challenge at Turf Moor and he admits his reputation is on the line as he aims to help the younger generation develop into first-team players.

“There are targets over time, not specific in terms of one must get through every year, obviously it depends what is recruited at 16, 18 and filters through to me, but I have a say in who comes into that age group as well,” he was quoted as saying by the Burnley Express.

“So my name and reputation is on the line, to try and actually get players to come through. It’s my decision who comes in, so I have to produce it out in that pitch. I’m accountable.”
