Manchester United failed to take advantage of Arsenal’s defeat to Watford as the Red Devils were held to a 0-0 draw by a spirited Hull City in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
United dominated most of the game but could not beat goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic who was inspiring for Hull.
The draw means United remain in the sixth position in the league table on 43 points, four points off the top four.
Hull moved off the bottom of the table to 19th.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic had United’s first opportunity on 14 minutes from 25 yards but Jakupovic tipped the ball around the post.
In the 41th minute Jakupovic was called to action again this time denying Paul Pogba.
Hull almost snatched the lead through Lazar Markovic in the 52nd minute but Marcos Rojo made a vital block.
United went close again on 56 minutes but Marcus Rashford failed to get a good strike after expertly bringing down Pogba’s cross.
Juan Mata had the best chance of the game in the 73rd minute but the brilliant Jakupovic somehow stopped the ball from crossing the line.
Markovic almost stole the win for Hull with four minutes left only to see his shot come off the post.
Jakupovic made two quick saves first a header from Rojo before punching away Pogba’s curler.
Also on Wednesday night at the bet365 Stadium Stoke and Everton played out a 1-1 draw.
Peter Crouch gave Stoke the lead on seven minutes, scoring his 100th Premier League goals, but an own goal by Ryan Shawcross drew Everton level.
Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman was introduced for Kevin Mirallas on 69 minutes.
