Resilient Stoke Peg Back Wasteful Man United

Manchester United were forced to a 1-1 draw by Stoke City at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Anthony Martial who came in a substitute gave United the lead but Joe Allen equalised for Stoke after David De Gea spilled Glen Johnson’s initial shot.


United now occupy the sixth spot in the league table while Stoke lifted themselves off the bottom to 19th.

United missed many clearcut chances as Stoke avoided defeat at Old Trafford for the first time in decades. Stoke goalkeeper Lee Grant was the man of the match, making eight key saves.

United went close in the second minute when Paul Pogba found Zlatan Ibrahimovic who drew a double save from Lee Grant.

In the ninth minute Marko Arnautovic saw his dangerous cross cleared away by Eric Bailly before David De Gea comfortably collected a shot from range.

Geoff Cameron in the 14th minute met Joe Allen’s cutback but his effort went straight to De Gea.

Juan Mata went close for United on 22 minutes but his clever chip was tipped over the bar by Grant.

In the 27th minute Grant made a stunning reaction save to deny Jesse Lingard.

Pogba had a chance to put United ahead on 44 minutes but his fierce drive from the edge of the box went over the bar.

Ten minutes into the second half Allen saw his weak shot comfortably saved by De Gea.

In the 66th minute Ander Herrera saw his low shot go narrowly wide off the target.

A minute later United made a double change with Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial replacing Mata and Lingard.

Ibrahimovic went very close to breaking the deadlock on 68 minutes but his 20 yard strike flashed past the far post.

Martial finally put United ahead on 69 minutes curling the ball into the top corner after the ball fell to his feet.

Daley Blind had the chance to double United’s lead on 71 minutes but his goal bound shot was blocked for a corner.

In the 77th minute Stoke made a double substitution with Peter Crouch and Jonathan Walters going in for Wilfred Bony and Arnautovic.

United won a free-kick close to the edge of Stoke box after Martial was brought down but Rooney’s low shot was well saved by Grant.

Stoke drew level on 82 minutes through Allen who smashed the ball into the roof of the net after De Gea failed to deal with Glenn Johnson’s shot.

In the 86th minute Grant went down to parry Ibrahimovic’s low strike.

Pogba almost scored from close range on 89 minutes but his header came off the bar.
