Rhinos Do Enough To Edge Out Widnes

Leeds Rhinos had to dig deep to secure an important 16-6 win over Widnes Vikings in the Super League Qualifiers on Sunday.

After naming David Furner as their incoming new head coach on Saturday, the Rhinos took a big step on their way to securing their Betfred Super League status with a hard-fought win at Widnes.

They now sit second behind Salford in the Qualifiers after four games and know a top-three finish after seven matches, which would guarantee their place in the top flight for next season, is well within their grasp.

Richie Myler set up Luke Briscoe on the counter-attack for the game’s first try after a quiet opening half-hour but Liam Sutcliffe missed the conversion attempt and Widnes hit back to lead 6-4 at the break thanks to Tom Olbison’s converted try.

Australian hooker Matt Parcell crossed on 55 minutes to put Leeds back in front and the visitors survived a few more scares before Myler’s late try, converted by Sutcliffe, eventually sealed the unconvincing win.

The defeat for the Vikings means they are now staring at relegation down to the Championship as they sit second-bottom in the Qualifiers after four straight defeats.
