Rio 2016: Amun Dismisses Team Nigeria, U-23 Eagles’ Medal Prospects

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja: Former Secretary General of Nigeria Football Federation and ex-Golden Eaglets coach, Fanny Amun, has urged Nigerians not to expect medals from the Nigerian contingent to next month's Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.

According to Amun, expectations should not be high because the authorities responsible for preparing the team to excel did not do so and the confidence of the athletes and their officials is very low.

"Olympics are not about just participating, every athlete that qualifies for the games will be aiming to win medals and you don't win medals when you are ill-prepared," Amun told Completesportsnigeria.com.

"You can only reap what you sow. Nigeria cannot reap what we did not sow, so people should not expect any miracle in Rio.

"It is sad that our teams for the Rio Olympic Games could not go on a training tour or camping outside the shores of this country where they could train with better facilities and equipment. It will take a miracle for Team Nigeria to win a medal in Rio because we did not prepare for it."

On the football team, Amun, who led the Eaglets to the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup title, also expressed doubts about the team following the withdrawal of some top players listed for the games, adding that those who made the team can prove book makers wrong by bulldozing their to the medal range but added that the quality of players in the team is low.

Amun also urged coach Samson Siasia to reject further offers to handle the Nigerian Under-23 team in the future, adding that Siasia has nothing to prove there again having won silver in the past. He urged Siasia to give way to younger coaches to try out with the team while he braces for bigger challenges.
