Rio 2016 Star Sadiq Targets Eagles World Cup Spot, Wants To Be Next Drogba

By Adeboye Amosu: Former U-23 Eagles striker Sadiq Umar hopes to push for a place in Nigeria’s squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, reports Completesportsnigeria. com.

Umar came into limelight after bagging four goals for Nigeria’s U-23s in the men’s football event of the Rio 2016 Olympics Games.

The forward picked up an ankle injury while in action for Italian club AS Roma after the games and was ruled for six months.

He spent the first half of the campaign on loan at another Italian club Torino and after failing to secure regular playing berth at the club, the youngster has joined Dutch club NAC Breda on a six- month loan deal for the rest of the season.

“A lot can change in four months. There is a chance, however small, that I can go to the World Cup in Russia. That’s why I came to NAC. I have to stay fit, play and score of course. Then the World Cup should be possible,” Umar told Dutch online news outlet bndestem.nl.

The 21-year-old also spoke about the decision to leave Italy for Holland which he described as a tough choice.

“It was not an easy decision to leave Italy. The Serie A is high level, a highly competitive league. In the Netherlands the level is lower, this is a challenge that I have to accept,” he added.

“I called a number of footballers who I know well to gather information about the Dutch League, including Kevin Strootman. He said the league is an excellent platform for attackers to become better.

“In Italy my prospects of playing on a regular basis was not that great. I have to learn to become more of a killer like Didier Drogba; together with Emmanuel Adebayor, he is my role model.”
