Rio 2016 Track & Field: Okwelogu Out, Osazuwa Struggles

By Oladimeji Loko, in Rio:

Nneka Okwelogu has the distinction of being the first Nigerian athlete to crash out of the track and field event after day one actions ended here at the Olympic Stadium.

Competing in the shot-put event, Okwelogu was only successful in only one throw out of the three allowed and the miserable effort, a 16.67m was not enough to see her out of her group.

New Zealand's Valerie Adams made only one throw – a 19.74 and it was enough to lead the group.

Uhunoma Osazuwa too didn't fare better in the Women's Heptathlon. The Nigerian girl is now placed a distant 24th after four events.

In a field of 31 athletes which includes Britain's defending Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill who leads the group with 4057 points and other top heptathletes, Osazuwa's 3609 points, a massive 448 behind the leader has effectively ruled her out getting near the podium.

‎Heptathlon continues today with the long jump scheduled for 11. 45 am local time ( 3.45pm Nig).
