Rivers United Captain: Why We Apologised To Wike After Protest

By Adeboye Amosu:
Rivers United players have apologised to Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, following their protest on Tuesday to demand for the payment of their sign-on fees for the 2014/2015 season, Completesportsnigeria. com reports.

Skipper of the team, Austin Festus, told Completesportsnigeria.com that they have apologised to the governor for their action after he promised to ensure the payment of the sign-on fees.

“The governor addressed us personally at the government house and he promised to ensure we get the money as soon as possible,” Festus told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“He has been to good to us by ensuring prompt payment of our salaries since he became governor of the state and the sign-on fees was owed by the former governor.

“He has already approved the payment of the money and we apologised to him for not using a more subtle way of resolving the issue.”

Pictures circulated on social media of the players discussing with Wile, with the standout image showing one of the players lying at the feet of the governor apparently begging for forgiveness.

Media officer of the club, Sammy Wejinya, also corroborated Festus’ views in a statement he released earlier on Tuesday.

“This morning, players of Rivers United FC went to the Rivers State Government House to press home demands for the payment of sign on fees for the 2014/15 football season,” Wenjiya wrote.

“It should be noted that these monies were owed by the previous administration, before the merger, and during the days of Sharks and Dolphins FC.

“The Governor addressed the players personally and promised to look into their demands.

“The players thanked the Governor and apologized for their actions of this morning.”
