ROAD TO RUSSIA: Who Should Spearhead Super Eagles Attack At 2018 World Cup?

The Super Eagles have not been found wanting in attack. At least so far. But there is this feeling that the squad still lacks a prolific pointman who can be relied upon to supply the goals in tight matches against high-quality opposition.
Under Gernot Rohr’s guidance, the Super Eagles have often played the 4-3-3 system with two wide forwards supporting the centre forward.
Rohr played Odion Ighalo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Brown Ideye and Anthony Nwakaeme as the centre forwards in the qualifying campaign for the Russia 2018 World Cup.
Although Nigeria breezed through a supposedly tough qualifying group that contained Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia, none of the strikers scored more than twice. Iheanacho scored two goals, Ighalo scored once, while the others did not get on the scoresheet.
Instead, it was wide forward Victor Moses who scored three goals, while Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi added two each. Even central midfielder Mikel Obi scored twice.
So, should Rohr stick with the strikers he has already used during the qualifiers? Which of them should be the spearhead in Russia? Ighalo? Iheanacho? Nwakaeme?
Or should the likes of Henry Onyekuru, Olanrewaju Kayode, Victor Osimhen and others still be given a shot at leading the Super Eagles attack in Russia? It is time again to have your say as Completesportsnigeria.com continue our Road To Russia World Cup Debate series.

  • it is our wingers that has been winning the match for us and most of our goals has been on counter attacks, so 3-5-2 will be okay with Moses and Iwobi in the front and mikel should step up his game and be fast with the ball and our two wing backs should be swift and i think ebuehi and Aina can do the job perfectly.

    • That is true! The coach will have to keep Echiejile out of the team cos of his injuries, he cant run also they will have to keep Ezenwa out of the team for he is too fearful and panicky. He will conceed cheap goals.

    • You need excellent back 3 and fullbacks which is not in the team at the moment.

    • Yeah! we need 3 good defenders and Balogun,Ekong and Awaziem is there even shehu may replace awaziem and Idowo too may replace Balogun from the left cos the guy is good defensively and omeruo should just find his form and make the team also.

    • Plus we should just swallow our pride and allow enyeama back in the team, this is our chance and if we dont use it well we will have ourselves to be blame…this world cup is open any team can win it! the current Brazil team is average even Germany is struggling!

    • Ezenwa should be in the team he tried and is better than apeyi

    • Mikel’s lack of pace and his brilliant passing range means he’s deployed as a deep lying playmaker in the mould of Andre Pirlo

    • I concur that Enyeama be called back to the team. Ezenwa should also make the team as thank a you to his brilliant and by chance performance during the qualifications. No team has it all this time, the game is open to any country that makes it to Russia. My humble opinion.

    • Yeah ofcos but ola must step up . all attacks should b good at striking to goal n cudos to john ogu . enyama is welcome but we shouldn’t rely solely on him cos injury is prone to happen . may God grant Ikeme good health n also help us discover a great keeper ever Amen.

  • we don’t need a point man, that’s what kills our football, anybody in d team is capable of scoring goals. Any team that built his team on point -man , always fail. look at d history of our soccer,we have been successful when every player is capable of scoring goals

    • No team plays without a natural NO.9! We need 1.

    • Spain won a tournament with Fabregas as d false number 9…..Bayern has won trophies with Muller as a false 9

    • A good team should be able to adapt to changes in formation. In some matches,we will need a point man as a striker, in other matches a FALSE 9 is needed just like wingers who can split the defensive team apart. Even defenders score goals. That’s total football.

  • V.moses O.ighalo A.iwobi

  • the squad is ok we still need someone like tammy abraham, he can do some wonders.
there’s still time to get him

    • okwubunne innocent 3 years ago

There is no doubt that we are lacking in a real striker in the team but the Nigeria do better when everybody can score.meanwhile,we can look up to victor osimhen to mature into the dream striker ,not so soon though

    • Bro. sincerely the guy is not good he is only playing in the premiership bcos he was born and bred in England. i have watch him play.

    • Tammy Abraham is gone forever, he has already played for England in an int.Friendly match so their is no way he can play for Nigeria again.

    • Int‘l friendly isn‘t a competitive senior football match, he could still play for Nigeria if he so desires just as the Netherlands are reportedly still routing for Ebuehi too.

    • That as far as he is being beg to play for us he is as good as of no use

    • Forget him he is not better than Victor Moses ,igahlo ,or even Simeon so let him go to hell

    • We also have kelechi ihenacho our team is ok and complete

    • The guy is not as good as our present strikers. We wish all the best. We don’t need him.

    • Abraham is not good enough ighalo and Onyekuru are far better than him

    • abraham’s not gone forever, he only played in a friendly and not competetite match… i think he’s good considering what he did last season on loan in english second division. and doing good now atswansea

  • ifeanyi 3 years ago

We don’t need a point man. In modern day football, anyone in the team can score goal. Thank God the coach have discovered defenders who can support the attack and score goals also. It will help us in the World Cup.

  • The team is OK. We don’t need Anyone.

  • Kaycee 3 years ago

the attack is ok, the hallmark of a good team is when goals ‘re shared all across the squad moreover it will be hard to single out a particular player to tight mark by an opponent

  • Yes we need a proven goal poacher.

  • Okeren kelvin 3 years ago

Who is that proven goal scorer? Maybe we should borrow Harry Kane! We know the players we have? We make do with what we have

  • omo9ja 3 years ago

Yes….yes…. and yes. We do need a main striker. We have Obafemi Martin’s, Ike Uche and Nsofor. These are the experienced players Rohr needed to injects into the team.

Young strikers, Osimeh and Paul Onuchi.
We are lacking nothing right now but it’s left to Rohr to choose from these great strikers. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • Wole Adeniji 3 years ago

Its a good thing to have a team whereby anyone or everyone can score, it definitely shows quality in the team and its an evidence of good team work. however a team like the Super Eagles still needs a reliable striker with 95% goal scoring ability or form. this is the world cup, a team needs that special one that can make a difference when goals drought set in against a formidable team. you need a striker make a difference, someone that can deliver from any angle or tight situations.
dislikes of Victor Osinhem shows great potentials and very promising, Henry Oyekuru and kayode olanrawaju are options to try out. otherwise Nigerian team needs to scouts for that special one.

  • Chima E Samuels 3 years ago

We need weapon of Mass destruction Martins who agree with me first go and scout at Shangai shehua

  • Our main best striker is still Odion Ighalo. So the striking force or group should be built around Odion Ighalo. None is better than him at the moment. We have seen others play and this is the conclusion of the matter. The pin man is Odion Ighalo. Others could follow.

  • Shegelistical 3 years ago

Yes martin is proven he use both feet, he can play from flank, middle or a supporting striker if he is injury free je got that pace to compliment palmwine football least i forgot he can shoot.

  • Edoman 3 years ago

Thank God we have Idowu now. For a good striker, we need PAUL UNUACHU now than ever. Cheek him out in Youtube.

  • omo9ja 3 years ago

Yes….yes…. and yes. We do need a main striker. We have Obafemi Martin’s, Ike Uche and Nsofor. These are the experienced players Rohr needed to injects into the team.

Young strikers, Osimeh, Fanendo Adi and Paul Onuachi.
We are lacking nothing right now but it’s left to Rohr to choose from these great strikers. God bless Nigeria!!!

    • Not only martins, Ik uche and nsofor, we also have Rashidi Yekini, Samson Siasia, Segun Odegbami, Benedict Akwuegbu, Victor Agali, Daniel Amokachi, we even have the king himself Kanu Nwankwo. FIFA must allow us take all of them to the world cup. We are going with 70players while 22 of our players will be playing against 11 players of other countries.#anakogheri

      • Cristen 3 years ago

Oga u kill me with this reply
        Pity na
U want to resurrect rashidi also.

      • Okiks 3 years ago

#Joel bros u no go kill person o.
Some guys’ analysis don pass dis platform. They’re supposed to be an international pundit walai…

  • Any of our fit striker then let him spearhead the attack

  • Joseph 3 years ago

EZENWA IS A GOOD GOALKEEPER. The recent 5 games he has played he kept 3 clean sheets. The other 2 goals he conceded, 1 was a penalty against algeria and 1 against cameroon away.we hardly lose a match with him btw the sticks. I dont knw hw else u measure a good keeper if nt by performance. I’m nt saying we dont need enyeama, bt what if he refuses to heed d coach’s call? In ezenwa we have a good cover.

  • Maccollins Njoku 3 years ago

The Super Eagles don’t need any new addition, all things been equal baring injuries and loss of form what the eagles need are simply players that can compliment, improve and make the team competitive, so the likes of Onyekuru and Nwaekeme can bring good competition to the existing options and fresh breath from the bench, the goals and assist have spread from across. this means the eagles are a team.

  • d super.eagle is like a complete laLiga fc. we r good to go.

  • ndagi 3 years ago

let the coach try this onuachu he has the physical advantange and very good in the air

  • Ighalo is still d best for

  • jayeola aderemi 3 years ago

Well, if Rohr ll need additional attacker he ll decide who fits in but as it is Idowu,Ebuhei,Aina & Uzuoh are d latest revealations & timely blessings for Super Eagles for d mundial! Modern football requires all players to be deadly scorers. But,Rohr should delete Echejiele, retain Uzuoh,Nzenwa & invite a new goalkeeper.

  • Elisha Bassey 3 years ago

I’ve show dis guy on youtub, super eagles presently did dey services of Onuachu dis guy too much. dis will bring competition to dey attacking force.dey guy too much, better than Tammy Abraham.I’am anxious to watch dis guy putting on green and white.

  • Alex Iwobi shoul be used, because he has stamina. He can pair with Odion Ighalo upfront.

  • i think we good to go

  • Henry onyekuru and Kayode olanrewaju should be considered

  • The team attack is prolific, we don’t need a point man

  • The current super Eagles team is very okay and competitive. No team in the world can complain of lack of depth with Ighalo, Iheanacho and Onyekuru all battling for the no 9 spot. Ighalo should be used when playing 4-3-3 with V.Moses from the right and Iwobi from the left. While Iheanacho should be used ahead of Ighalo in 3-5-2. My ideal 23 man for world cup includes.
    2)Ebuehi,Shehu.3) Aina,Idowu.4, Ndidi,Agu.5)Ekong,Omeruo,6)Balogun,Awaziem.7)V.Moses,Musa.8)Onazi,Ogu 9)Ighalo,Iheanacho,Onyekuru 10)Mikel,Etebo 11)Iwobi,M.Simon.
    1)Akpeyi 2) Musa Mohammed 3)Echegile 4)Esiti 5)Ambrose 6)Agbo 7)Ibe 8)Azubuike 9)Kayode, Nwakaeme 10)Nwakali 11)Imo. Thank us later.

  • All we need is to fortify our defence line. Its not every time we can come from behind to win a match

  • We are not there yet.
    Beating Argentina……yes, Good!
At the World Cup proper, boys will be separated from men:
Goal Keeping department is shaky, our defense line may have to take sprinting lessons to cope with the pace of attackers in the World Cup. Mid section / midfield is relatively okay, but injure Mikel, there will be crisis!
Our attackers can’t convert half chances-you may not get full chance(s) in the World Cup proper.
There is work to be done!

  • chidiebere Uchegbu 3 years ago

Anthony Nwakeme has no business in that team. Rohr shud look build a point man

  • What happen to Ighalo?

  • Give Obafemi Martins a chance

  • Igaholo And Iwobi

  • We should convince tammy abraham he can help ighalo up front. We need a depth

  • I think attack is not the major issue but midfield.

    • Michael Demson 3 years ago

Attackers is our problem in the eagles now , because we have strikers who can not score up to 2, 3 goals in match unless V. Moses or A. Iwobi plays which is not good enough, let’s give our coach chance to scout for forign born Nigerian players who has white strong football mentality and experience not the likes of normal Nigerian players that has grown older in Nigeria before going to abroad as an u 21 that can not even kick an egg.

  • Obafemi Martins is still needed, for someone playing in Chinese league and we know how fast they play their football and he’s still in form scoring thunderous goals, i believe we still need him in the team, especially his goal scoring experience.

    • Stop promoting Obafemi Martins He is too old and can’t match the current play. We saw what he did at calabar when the late keshi invited him. Moreover for one goal Martins scores.. He has missed ten chances

  • Hmm in naija everybody is a coach

  • as for me, we don’t need more players, i believe in, victor moses, moses simon, odhion igalo, john obi mikel, leon balogun, alex iwobi, if we have these six players on the pitch, we don’t have any problem, an will can face any fucking country.

  • if u look at every successful teams at the world cup, they dont joke with experience.for eagles yo be successful at d world cup, they need the experience of Obafemi Martins and Odemwengie.shikena

  • Defence is d greatest problem of d team & not attack…am not too comfortable with Leon Balogun at d heart of d defence. A shoulder to shoulder run with strikers like; Lukaku; Aguero or even Rashford would shove aside & completely flattened out Balogun. He lacked d required body balance & pace for a robust defender. My opinion though.

  • I love d team wk and that us what we should stay with

  • We still need OBAFEMI MARTINS

  • Maybe Martins Should be recalled, I think.

  • Uzoho,ezenwa,akpeyi
    Victor moses,moses simon,musa,ighalo,iheanacho,iwobi,onyekuru……..we r good to go

  • Pls I don’t want people to be mentioning Martins obafemi again, why didn’t you guys mention kelechi ihennacho, that is always scoring in every super eagles match

  • Point!!! We just need a point man. Strong finisher.

  • The mistakes our coach is Making that he did not want to take risk. I believe we av striker in onyekuru. He scoring goes in his club and is d only consistence striker we av. Ighalo is not a consistent striker. In defense,we need d services of ebuche, and new defender from Russia also d likes of balogun, ola ina. In goalkeeping department ezenwa and akpeyi should not consider. Uzoho and our former under 17 keeper will good for World Cup.

  • Vincent Enyema is needed in that team

  • Matins is the answer to the solution, Oba goal is a blessed child. King lo goals

    • Michael Demson 3 years ago

Yes I still prefer that old Martins and Enyeama to the young Ighalo, Onyekuru and goalkeeper Akpeyi

  • Obafemi Martins still has the wherewithal for a world cup challenge. He he has experience, too. Those dismissing him with a wave of the hand because he is old are gravely mistaken. He may be old, but he is like wine, which gets better as it ages. That is why the Argentines give me the butterflies. They’re old, but they’re experienced, very experienced. OM has been pumping in goals in China despite his age. Rohr had better thrown him in for the experience.

    • excellent 3 years ago

he has never helped super eagles. infact he is a bad luck to eagles. it doesnt matter how well he is playing. all the time he couldnt deliver he was also doing well in his club.
