–Heartland league opener on hold
Armed gunmen Thursday attacked players and officials Kano Pillars Football club on their way to Owerri for Saturday’s Premier League opening fixture with hosts, Heartland of Owerri.
The incident which occurred along Abuja-Lokoja Road Thursday afternoon left as many as six players wounded.
Prominent among the injured players is Super Eagles fringe striker, Gambo Mohammed. Others include former Enyimba and Dream Team V midfielder, Eneji Otekpa, Adamu Murtala, Reuben Ogbonnaya and Ubong Ekpai.
The injured players are now receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Center, Lokoja following different degrees of injuries sustained in the attack.
However, LMC has put the opening fixture with Heartland on hold.
Head Coach of Kano Pillars, Okey Emordi was full of praises to God that no life was lost in the attack.
“We came close to death but God saved us because it could have been lost”, said a visibly shocked Emordi, a former Enyimba, Rangers and Heartland gaffer.
“Our bus ran into them and immediately they opened fire on us. One of them opened the door and forced it open. They then shot the boys, of which five were injured”.
