Rohr: How We Changed Tactics Vs England; Iwobi, Ndidi Fit For Czech Republic

Rohr: How We Changed Tactics Vs England; Iwobi, Ndidi Fit For Czech Republic

By Semiu Osho in London:

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has explained how his tactical switch improved his side’s performance in the 2-1 friendly defeat to England on Saturday while also giving injury updates on two key players, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

“In the first half we had our usual organisation of 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-11,” Rohr said during his post-match press conference.

“England made a very good beginning, put pressure on us. We changed to 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 if you like. We changed four players immediately but unfortunately in the World Cup you can’t change four players. But the players who came in did very well and saw a good second half. We have to work much more in the two weeks we have before our first game.”

Rohr assured goalscorer Iwobi will be ready for the next game after the player appeared to be holding his hamstring towards the end of the encounter.

“No he’s fine. (He suffered) only cramps. Other players had cramp issues too which shows the effect of travelling. From Uyo to Port Harcourt, then to Abuja to see the President and then coming here. I’m happy now that we don’t have real injuries. Only cramps,” Rohr said.

The Eagles boss assured that Leicester midfielder Wilfried Ndidi, who has been nursing a hamstring injury, will be ready for their next warm-up game against Czech in Austria on Thursday.

Rohr added: “We followed a plan made for his recovery by Leicester. We didn’t think it was the right game for him to return. But he should be ready for the next game.”

Onazi and Joel Obi were very poor today. They should be dropped.

    First to comment
Please, what is the score between Nigeria and super eagles?
Did okocha and kanu play the match?

    • Yes, Kanu scored two goals. Okocha scored one. We lost the match by 4 goals to 3.

  • Ifeanyi 3 years ago

hmmmm now I can finally breath well, I thought Iwobi had suffered hamstring towards the end of the match to be sincere, have been worried all evening, Iwobi, Ogu, Moses and ofcos Mikel is our hope going to the world Cup, I wish the super Eagles best of luck in the world Cup proper, I have a feeling we will surprise the world in Russia

  • Well done Rohr
This Rohr, know his stuff good.

I said last week that Ahmed Musa might be dropped.
I have always said in the past that the reason Onazi made it this far in the Super Eagles was because of Daniel Omokachi.
How can a midfielder who can not run, or complete a single dribble be in our national team?
He only balloons the ball any direction he is facing, that’s not modern soccer, ball pocession is what soccer is all about now.
Onazi can not keep pocession .

    Onazi,and Echiejile should drop.
Ola Aina should be retained to reward his loyalty and encourage others to switch allegiance to Nigeria.

The first half was as bad as the pattern or formation we played.
Ighalo and Iwobi/ Simmy should be combined in a two men attack: 3-5-2, and maybe 4-3-3, or 3-4-1-2.
We will do well, we will top our group, we will score at least 6 goals in the group stage.
Watch out for a continuous improvement, better with every game!!!!
    Fly the pride of Africa!
Fly the great beast of West African Forest!!
    Fly the king of birds!!!
    Fly the Nigerian Super Eagles!!!!

Nigerians like to deceive themselves. I decided to cautioned myself not to comment because I saw this coming.

My advice to Nigerians is that don’t put your faith in this team too much. I have been saying this for a while that
    “sentiments apart”
    “Sentiments apart”
    “Sentiments apart”
Now, you all understood what was that means? Therefore, It is time for everyone of us to wake up from sleep. If cares is not taking, sentiments and

Politics game would tarnished this year world cup dreams and would put coach Rohr image in shame. NFF please
Leave the coach alone to select the right players and the coach also needs to put sentiments aside and selecting our best 23 man list.

The list of 30 man list is questionable, that is where
    the politics game comes in.

Nigeria vs England match, Coach Rohr got his tactics wrong in the 1st half.

I’m not in the mood to talk about the whole system today. If coach Rohr want to do extra ordinary good, he must ring changes in the 1st 11.

Before he dropped Ajiboye for Akpeyi, I said he would dropped Ajiboye which he eventually did and I said it here on this forum that Eagles would paid for it and they did today.

Uzoho is good but he is not for this world cup. After the world cup which means future goalkeeper.

More of this is coming if coach Rohr and NFF failed to do the right thing. It is getting too late now….. I have said my own before now but the coach and NFF ignored my words of wisdom.

Even, some of my forum mates called many of us internet coaches. For me, we are not ready for world cup yet. Now, over to you all. God bless Nigeria!!!

I agree with being careful about believing our own hype. But be careful. There are still people here who think Nigeria will win the World Cup. I don’t know which Nigeria they have in mind. The first half display was very amateurish and not worthy of a team going to Russia and if they play that way, they will head for home after 3 games. Uzoho is not material for the Super Eagles. As usual, poor set piece defending led to the first goal, just like the 3rd Argentina goal in 2014. Uzoho should have blocked Kane’s shot. I hope they prove me wrong. I will still root for the Super Eagles.

      Thanks bro.
I think I saw a game of real world cup. We all learnt from it.
I gave England first half and Nigeria second half.
I saw midfielders who lost out in big occasions.
However, England needs to becareful now, because, oppositions can easily predict them now. Fast paced games, more men upfront.they fizzled out in the second half. Nigeria you cannot predict now.
Also, john ogu is better composed midfielder than our many states, NFF watch this!
In addition, eagles should be more composed and defence packed in first twenty minutes, not to conceed goals.
Omero looks calmed and composed as a defender for big games.
Finally, I expect to see Mikel, Ogu, Ndidi in our next game. Shehu should give way to Ebuehi, that is a top class right back.
Thanks for the friendlies, it has exposed most areas. Germany lost, Iceland lost, they all mind games.

      • Kweli 3 years ago

Agree brother. Onazi should not be between the posts. He is too short for high balls. The second goal could not have been scored if Alampasu was between the posts. The kid has outstanding reflexes. Uzoho may be this team’s undoing. He may be the Karius of the Super Eagles. I don’t know why our teams have such poor performance in set piece taking and defending. Very poor and year in year out with no signs of improvement. Even then , if the S/E can sustain the same tempo as they did in the first 20 minutes of the second half, they can go far. Unfortunately, games last 90 minutes, not 20.

I agree… The first teamr rohr brought in… Am very sure they are politics player… Because dey didn’t do well with rohr tatics

    • Olawale 3 years ago

I disagree with some of omo9ja comments.. The most was on uzoho.. When last did you watch alampasu play for his club? And any goal keeper can concede the 2goals he conceded.. That the future goal keeper for Nigeria.. And England weren’t fantastic either.. I see a good play in 2nd half and I believe the coach knows his first team for world cup.. Moreover its a friendly and not the world cup.. I still believe in the team to reach quarter final..

  • Israel O 3 years ago

    I agree with Omonaija!
we r too sentimental and political with our choice of players!
I was indeed happy with what I saw yesterday, because it was a clear revelation of how the world cup would be.
Leon Balogun is good but he is not strong, so use Omeruo- troost pair at the centre.Omeruo is strong.Ekong will play better with Omeruo, since Omeruo can cover for him.
Replace onazi, who is very immature with play and cannot deliver one straight pass, with Ndidi. Pair Ndidi, Etebo and Mikel in midfield, Owobi up front for his skill and killer passes.
Ighalo is good when he sees the ball, thus the midfield must be very strong up front and defensively- Iwobi/Mikel attacking midfield,Etebo&Ndidi defensive.
Victor moses is forming big ball, he will not tack or run, but what do we do since simon(our best upfront) is injured?
at the left and right back, play Ebuehi at the right, shehu is very careless with balls and does not support the attack, unlike the versatility of young Ebuehi.
when Igholo is sub, it should be Simmy not iheanacho.
I have said what I think should be.
    Its left for the Coach.
    I wish super eagles goodluck

  • Joshua 3 years ago

That so called midfielders called onazi and joel obi should be dropped.there was no cohesion in the first half our midfielders dished out wrong passes.i was impress wit uzoho, mikel agu, ebuehi, most especially iwobi nd etebor.i feel iwobi shld be given the nmber 10 shirt.victor moses impact wasnt felt in the game,he should better improve or be axed frm d team no room for indscipline.the coach is tactically sound he made d right changes that turned d game around.there was improvemnt in omerou game petnering well wit ekong.ebuehi is better in attack than abdulahi.i hope to see a more improved super eagles against czech republic

  • There is different between EPL LALIGA and other league.
Iwobi mikel moses were confident with ball. other league players including the defence were afraid and confident wit the ball.
Etebo iheanacho came in were also confident wit the ball.

The V moses i know is no more, so iheanacho and iwobi is my hope in russia.

  • Any Keeper can concede cheap goals after too much pressure. Nna, the first half pressure was too much. Going by what we have in camp, Uzoho is still d best. He only needs supports from the defenders. Imagine Akpeyi in goal yesterday or Ezenwa that is very weak when it comes to set paces (Remember, European Teams are very good in that).
    2) I’ve said it before, Ebuehi is our right back not Shehu. Thank God it shows yesterday in every aspect.
    3) Nigeria Vs Senegal… Nigeria were struggling and on one goal down until J. OGU came in. We changed d game and drew d match through iheanacho’s penalty.
Against Argentina, it was Ndidi, J. OGU and Mikel. …Argentines started calling us physical Nigerians because of the trio. We won 4 goals to 2.
    Yesterday was another example.
    3) I’ve seen Onazi, Echiejile as d problems of Nigerian team since against south Africa… the 2nd and 3rd captain respectively(Imagine). Hmm. ..dropping Aina for Echiejile will be a disaster at the world cup.
Rohr had selected his final 23 before yesterday’s game. That was y J. Obi switched from 25 to 15, Idowu from 24 to 2, Ola Aina from 2 to 27. I wish I can see the bench list again to know Mikel Agu and Awaziem’s No. Note, any number from 24 upwards is dropped.

  • Ayphillydegreat 3 years ago

@Sean you are perfectly spot on. Rohr has already selected his final 23 for the WorldCup before the game against England. Obi is assured of going to the WorldCup that’s why he switched to number 15 with his name on it. Same applies to every player that plays against England yesterday. Aina is a standby and will not be part of the 23. I don’t know if one of Agu and Awaziem have also join him. But I think they will still be with the team in case of any injury.

  • Olayinka 3 years ago

1.First half was so poor. I expected to see much more fighting spirit from the boys.
2.How could a player of Onazi’s experience give away the ball like that?
    3. Ogu’s interceptions were excellent when he came in in the 2nd half.
    4. What made the coach give up on Ezenwa? He too could have improved with each game if given the same opportunities as Uzoho.I’ve noticed that German coaches like tall goal keepers.
    5. It was unprofessional of Moses not to have kept in shape even though he was given some days off. How can you gas out after 50 mins and you say you are preparing for the world cup?
    6. I would have preferred to see Simy Nwankwo as a sub for Ighalo instead of Iheanacho. This is the type of match they could have used to test him. They could even have paired him with Ighalo to test their compatibility.
    7. Ebuehi was excellent when he came in as a sub. Perhaps we should consider starting him?
    8. Idowu made some nice interceptions coming from his fullback position to assist the central defenders. However its strange to have a left back that cant use his left foot. With all the scouting network they couldnt find a left footed replacement for the maligned Echiejile?
    9. I am getting tired of the excuse of playing with caution to avoid injuries. If they dont get used to playing hard and well, when will they learn? Are England not going to the world cup?

  • Papa J 3 years ago

People will still be shouting experience!experience! We can c what experienced onazi brings to the table. Not undermining experience. But it’s useless if it’s not blended with brilliance and creativity. Thank God for friendly matches else it’ld ve been a disaster…..first half display made England look like Brazil. Thank God for second half substitution n tactics that changed the game.

  • If this coach Gisernot Rohr is in his right frame of mind and wouldn’t allow himself to be influenced by those politicking with players’ selection, he should by now have known that the likes of Mikel Agu, Ogenyi Onazi, Echiejile and Joel Obi shd be dropped from this team.
Yes I know only two more players should be dropped, but in place of Joel Obi let us draft in Kelechi Nwakali and in place of Onazi I would love to see that guy that mesmerized the Athletico Madrid’s defence with beautiful dribbles that culminated in the second goal – between the S/Eagles team B and A/Madrid. I think his name was Musa Abdullai or so.
Papa Mikel Obi is old for 90mins full-fledged football action and needs someone to giving him a hard chase from the national team which only big stage competition like the world cup can offer in terms of exposure and experience!
Nwakali must go to the world cup no matter what. That guy is our jope and future for the attacking midfield position if truly we’re planning well and planning right.
All in all kudos shd be given to Rohr and his guys for yesterday’s outing, it wasn’t a bad one at all.
    #Go #Eagles #Go!!!

Hmmm, so much talk on the platform, the friendly exposed our weakness which points to the fact that we are slow starters. But I see that some players in d team are becoming complacent, the coach shld b watchful n nip this attitude in d bud. The coach n his psychologists shld always indentify players with d right frame of mind going in2 every match. If ur best player is not in d best frame of mind going in2 a crucial match he shld be benched. Its not only when a player is injured n out of form that u bench, any player not psychologically fit is not in form. We should learn n learn fast wcup is @ d corner. Up naija up Rohr
