Rohr: I’m Not Sad With Czech Defeat, Eagles Still Not Ready For World Cup

By Johnny Edward:
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has played down his side’s 1-0 defeat to Czech Republic in Wednesday’s final warm-up game before the World Cup, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Chelsea defender Tomas Kalas who played on loan at Fulham last season tucked in a rebound in the 25th minute of the encounter to hand Czech Republic victory.
Rohr who watched his side slump to another defeat — his fourth since he took charge of the team two years ago — admitted after the defeat that his lads are not ready to face Croatia.
“We’ve nine days to be ready for our first match against Croatia, as at today we are not ready,” Rohr was quoted on the official Twitter handle of the Super Eagles.
“I am not sad because of this result, the result that matters will be in Russia.”
Nigeria will take on Croatia in their first game in Group D before battling Iceland and Argentina.

One question, if u are given the job of a coach will you show all your strategies to your opponent? Remember people are scouting the super eagles in all these games. Definitely the coach has his strategies for the competitive games. He has kept the opponents guessing. It is better they underate us. We shall see how it pans out in Russia.

  • deen4real 3 years ago

The three things the coach needs to do is 1. Stick to 3 5 2 formation, 2. Work on set piece. 3. Change position of mikel and Iwobi, mikel should sit deep and Iwobi should move upward and be our main creative player for the striker.
    All will be okay.

    • Tommy 3 years ago

You are absolutely on poin. If he can change this, Nigeria will soar higher in Russia. Why will Mikel be playing ahead of Iwobi. It should be the other way round.

    • Rayman 3 years ago

u are on point. To me i would not start a moses, i will rather put iwobi as the 8 behind the striker and mikel seat a little deep just in front of ndidi and Ogu for that smooth transition from defence to attack and maintain a 3-5-2 formation. Then work on conciding early goals mostly via set pieces.

Am sick and tired of this tune of “where are not ready”,where are not ready “.,when are we going to be ready, after the world cup ? or when the mundial kick started?.
abeg, spare us wit those words of urs ..mr ..G.R

    • Steve 3 years ago

Hahaha hahaha!!..no, na when Buhari hands over in 2019!!lol!

  • Ogie samuel 3 years ago

Drop those who not ready to play football,

  • It like samson siarsia wil be the one that wil save super eagle he is a good coach…because he wil have the power to remove ighalo, because G.R dont have the power over ighalo.

  • Edoman 3 years ago

There you go folks, Rohr is taking us to Russia with full admission that the team that he is taking and leading is not READY. What more do you want to hear. Don’t be sad if the team exited after three matches. Don’t invest your time and emotions on this Nigeria team this year. This team is already set to fail. l could go and on but, enough said for now.

  • Bestsports. 3 years ago

Nigeria cannot be able to qualify from that group at all. All hope is finally lost. Pls let us all ONLY enjoy three world cup games and forget the tournament.

  • The Super Eagles look like a high school team on defense. They seemed lost defending corner kicks and crosses into the box in the last 3 friendlies before WC 2018.This is a recipe for disater. Offensively they have the talent to score goals but need to find the open man. I saw a lot of selfish “go for glory “shots. I have this pit in the stomach feeling that Croatia will exploit the defensive weakness early and often. Defensive gaffs have been the undoing of Nigerian teams in the past. I was hoping a German coach will finaly inculcate the typical German discipline in defense. Sadly this is not the case. Eagles need at least draw against Croatia othewise it’s on to 2022.

  • Saheed Saka 3 years ago

Pls don’t give up on super eagles yet…their best is yet to come, just wait and see.

  • Sunnyb 3 years ago

U guys should just  please go and sit down,I warned u guys for months in this forum. Some ppl abused me others went off on me. Listen guys  we are going  to this World Cup with bunch of over rated players  with the exemption of Moses. Iwobi is always all over the map, Mikel too slow in decisions makking, clueless Musa, never improved Iheanacho, Ighalo  is not potent,.our defenders are too slow and always jittery. We don’t have a sound keeper. Rohr has being luck for a while  I guess fowl yansh don open. By way Siasia is a better coach any day.

    • Onyekachi 3 years ago

You criticise a lot. Any little thing Nigerians will remember the past, has siasia not coached this team b4? We always want things be done perfectly but we can’t stand for our self’s.

    • Dr. Drey 3 years ago

Oya manufacture world class players that we can take to the world cup for us na. Kindly list 11 nigerian footballers anywhere in the world that are world class. Are we supposed to go and sign players to play for nigeria at the world cup…? Is it not what we have we will manage….? Sorry to say but ur point of criticism is baseless

    • Den can win silver with dis team .if given d chance with invitation  of 2 or 3 players

    Soar Super eagles

    • Sunnyal 3 years ago

You are one of those still living in denial. If your coach say team is not ready with their first World Cup game just over a week then you need to just accept the reality that team is going nowhere.

  • Chika 3 years ago

Mr rohr play the same team that beat Argentina in friendly always. Iheanacho iwobi in attack and we beat croatia

  • Guys calm down, some people said 9ja wouldn’t qualify from the so called group of death comprising Algeria (ranked #1 in Africa), Cameroon (recently crowned AFCON champ) and Zambia but 9ja defied all odds to win with style and a game to spare. Don’t ever count any 9ja team out in any competition, that 9ja spirit and mentality can and should never be discarded. Again friendlies are like experiments and should be seen as such. The same Croatia have lost 2 of the matches they’ve played against Peru and Brazil without scoring a goal and conceding 4 (they lost 2:0 each) they beat Mexico 1:0. I know people will say they played better opposition but is England, Poland, Serbia, czech republic even congo pushovers. I think not. Argentina’s recent record is also nothing to write home about, they lost to 9ja (4:2), beat italy (2;0) lost to spain 6:1 and beat minnows Haiti who are still recovering from that devastating earthquake only 4:0. Then there is Iceland, they’ve lost all their 3 recent friendlies, mexico beat them 3:0, Peru beat them 3:1, and Norway beat them 3:2. I venture to say that 9ja has done comparatively well if not better than the rest of the teams in our group if we are going by friendlies. I don’t see or hear the other teams losing sleep over it. I still believe a little bit of tweaking and 9ja will soon start firing in all cylinders, Mark it some where. SE play the 3-5-2 that has worked for us with Uzoho (Gk), Ekong (right side of 3 man defense), Balogun (CD), Ogu (leftside of d 3 man defense), Ebuehi (RWB), Moses (LWB), Ndidi and Mikel (2 defensive midfielders), iwobi (attacking midfielder) Iheanaco and Simy (2 forwards) this team will flourish and score goals and prevent us from conceeding as well. There is enough smarts, height and brute force for defending set pieces like corners and free kicks (in & out swingers). SE we are solidly behind you, work hard for each other, play to your full potential and u guys will come out victorious.

    • Sunnyal 3 years ago

This is a different ball game my friend.  European and SA opposition are well organised , quick and very technical.
Our goalkeeper is a rookie, defence is so slow and sluggish, build up play is slow and predictable, we lack potent strikers….may I go on ….to make any meaningful impact at the World Cup which kickstarts exactly a week today

    • Steve 3 years ago

Proundly 9ja, let believe you , your write up was spot on but these boys /coach are really messing up , you have to go to the world cup with a winning mentality which the Eagles don’t have now ,more or less who is there to give us the goals when GR is addicted to Ighalo?

    • Saliu Rabiu 3 years ago

proudly 9ja, I enjoyed reading your comments o. Nice one GBAM!

    • Omoruyi steve 3 years ago

I think the super eagles will do well in Russia.what we are seeing now is players trying to adjust playing together with European oppositions.they’ve been doing well against African oppositions but against their European counterparts, they look like fish out of water.Victor moses is the greatest culprit. He flourishes well as a wing back at Chelsea but G R keeps playing him as winger. In the last two matches he played for Nigeria,it was glaring for all to see that Moses was too slow in making quick transitions and often times his link up play was disastrous. GR should take back to his better played wing back role to complement Ebuehi.Abdullahi should be made to fight alongside Omeruo for slots in the Heart of the defence.Musa should take that left wing position and its a pity Moses simon won’t be the tournament.Another area the eagles should work on is defending set pieces and creating chances to score. Iwobi should be our number 10 while mikel should complement him in the middle of the pack. When things are getting frustrating especially not being able to score the eagles should adopt fast wing play to link up with the number 9 and in case there is no head way players should be ready to get to the loose balls and take their chances by shooting. I wish the eagles good luck

    • Paschal 3 years ago

Proudly 9ja you are a great football analyst. We are indeed proud of you. And I believe the Eagles wont disappoint us by Gods grace. Even if they disappoint, I for one will support them even more. Whether we make it or not, let nobody ever make the mistake of sacking Gernot Rohr because that wull be the end of Nigerian football.

  • Use d team dat beat Argentina.

    • Obiora Anthony 3 years ago

I don’t know what is happening to the our coach,he always use ighalo who is not fast in attack.instead of iheanacho who can cantar attack with speed,as they did against Argentina in friendly. This super eagles are too slow,no fastness in their games, majority are playing individual game.how can they score when u allow ur opponent that move forward to settle back again.infact am confused with there style of play,no tactics,no pattern of playing,no cantar attack.so they have to improve especially in attack & defence, in aerial ball,in nooding, in up ball, in corner kick & free kick.more especially in any up ball that enter our 18 yard box,our defenders will be confused,so that what causes goals most especially.so we have to improve in all these aerials.by correcting all these,i strongly believe we will move forward in this world cup.

Guy you re the only person that make a point nd am with you

  • Bimbo 3 years ago

Siasia who could not qualify us for ordinary Nations’ Cup
With all due respect to Siasia, I’ll rather keep faith with the man who qualified us for World Cup from the Group of Death; this is not an age-grade competition

  • OKPONKU 3 years ago

guys the match yesterday was just a test match which i believed that the super eagles never planned to win, that was why it was free stadium entry.
u guys should not pencil our guys down. just believe in them , its gonna be a different ball game during the median tournament.

  • fasasi kunle 3 years ago

I greet all, as a matter of fact no world cup teams win all experimental matches. All coaches are trying to get best of the players by pairing them. Another factor is that, all the players know that any injury now he would be replaced which they don’t want that to happen at all but when they reach it would be different story. Before world cup 2010 Ghana lose their friendly match against Saudi 5-0. When tournament start every team know that, that is what they have been preparing for. People I don’t see any cause for alarm at all. Let just pray that our preparation is fruitful when the tournament start proper.

  • c boy 3 years ago

the super eagle playing like this have nothing to offer Nigeria in world cup

  • Kupto 3 years ago

Hmmm 20years ago we did thesame thing we loss 3 times and that time we qualified to knock out remember in 1998

  • Statistics shows that most time Ebuehi plays. We hardly concede. So why bench him?

  • I love the passion with which the so called naysayers and praise singers argue their points and I believe it’s shear love for the team and all we all want the team to succeed. Even the criticism laid on the doorsteps of onazi and Joel against England which I was part of was mostly outta love and our expectations that they could and should have done better. Our goalie is a rookie yes, but how many caps does the entire argentine goal keeping crew including Willy caballero have combined, I doubt it’s more than Uzoho but I may be wrong. I know the argument will be they keep goal for teams in la liga, bpl or clausura so they are automatically better and more experuenced than Uzoho, i beg to differ. The Argentine, croatian and icelandic defensers are speed racers abi, so ww are saying people like otamendi, mercado, Fazio, corluka, vida, lovren, and d many ‘ssons of iceland are all faster than our defenders. I honestly dont think so. Again i know it will be the same argument that they play for big teams like man city, liverpool, roma etc so they are automatically more experienced technically and tactically. Where were their technic and tactics where argentina were resoundly beaten by 9ja and spain, ok messi wasnt present and croatia by Peru.
As regards our goal scoring form I would have loved to see SE score more goals in the friendly games but i will rather we score less in friendlies and more in the mundial proper. I agree with most assertions that ighalo may not be the right man for the striker position as his goal per game return when donning the green and white since his U20 days (Egypt 2009) till now hasn’t been proficient. He plays better with 2 strikers upfront, when he was in Watford he played with Troy Deeney and even in Granada they played him alongside another striker. Play ighalo and Simy he will come good. Am not advocating for him as I would rather have iheanaco and simy upfront as there is no better in d box finisher than Iheanacho but i think d coach is too conservative to try it. God bless 9ja and its people and especially SE.

As regards winning mentally, I totally agree that it counts for a lot in terms of morale boost but having seen the result of the recent friendlies only very few countries won all their games. Some of tge so called big boys of world football stumbled such as Germany, spain, Croatia, Poland, Argentina. Don’t get me wrong I wished SE had played exciting football and won convincingly but that’s in d past now they just have to roll up their sleeves and work harder knowing 180 million people are rooting for them to succeed.

I wonder at the way Rohr handles the issue of coaching these players . First of all the issue of getting s playmaker apart from Mikel became too late when nwakali later showed up due to a friendly match against Spain . Secondly a coach rhat should understand rhat going to 5 world cips is more experience to be better for this seriously ! one .

  • my name is Seun and am also deaf.Mr rohr, please listen to me that I want to offer rohr that formation is 5 3 2 is line up against Croatia:Goalkeeper: udozo,
    DEFENDER:ebui,William, balgoun,ogu,idowu

    MIDFIELDER: iwobi,Mikel or etbo,nidi
