Rohr: Mikel Can Play In Cast Vs Argentina, Eagles Will Be Ready

By Adeboye Amosu:

Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has announced that team captain Mikel Obi, who sustained a hand injury in  Friday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup clash against Iceland, will be fit for the final group game against Argentina at the Krestovsky Stadium on Tuesday, reports Completesportsnigeria. com.

Mikel was in noticeable pains towards the end of the game and was attended to by the medics.

“We will be ready for the game against Argentina. Unfortunately there is one injury in the team. Our captain, John Mikel Obi fractured his hand against Iceland  but he can play with a cast. The medical team have done a good job on him,” Rohr stated in a short video on the Super Eagles Twitter handle.

“Aside him, everyone is fit. We are preparing for the next game. We will do everything to prepare the team in the best possible way.

“We came into our base camp the night after the game against Iceland. We had a good sleep and everyone recovered very well. Players who did not play had a special training and did the work they have to do.

“Then we watched the game between Germany and Sweden which was very interesting. This morning, we had a training session, our last before we travel  to Saint Petersburg for the game against Argentina.

“We go to Saint Petersburg this afternoon, three hours flight from Essentuki. Fresh weather, not too cold and not too hot. Tomorrow we will train again. We will be ready for the game.”

Rohr’s men sit in second position in Group D with three points, while Argentina occupy last place after they were thrashed 3-0 by Croatia on Thursday.

A win against the South Americans will send the Super Eagles into the second round while a draw could be enough depending on the outcome of the game between Croatia and Iceland.

You have learnt your leason again coach Rohr. We have warned you before the world cup concerning your final list. Kelechi Nwakeli would have been the solution now. I wish Mikel a speed recovery. God bless Nigeria!!!

Bros, I think you should try and learn how to analyse match /players situations.
Nwakali is good but let his time comes.
Mikel injury is not bad at all reason he can play 120 minutes of football.
What should concern is now is how to get the mind of SE ready psychologically. It’s going to be so or die.
One of the most finals before finals. It’s a grudge match.
We all as a country must pray one hour before the match. It’s going to too tensed.
I wish super eagles the very best of result. Amen

  • What is this one saying again?. Is it after d provisional list has been submitted that they will include Nwakali haba! by the way who is this Nwakali of a thing? after all he just shown in an inconsequential friendly match mtchhhhhhew. Forget talk about Nwakali abeg he is not Messi or Ronaldo

    • tayo by your comments you are proving day in day out that you know absolutely nothing about football. for you to even open your mouth and call Kelechi Nwakali “a Thing” is beyond me, anyway I don’t blame you you are a novice when it comes to football Knowledge because if not You would have the brain capacity to figure out that Kelechi Nwakali’s performance against Atletico was no fluke hence he is on the books of Arsenal and the reason he is struggling to secure work permit in England is because he has not featured enough for the Senior National team which made his exclusion from the final World Cup list to the Russia Mundial that much more unbearable for people who actually know football we are aware that to secure English Permit in football you have to be active in your countries national team for at least 8 games under your belt hence Henry Onyekuru’s struggles with Securing permit for Everton. By the way if you didn’t know, Kelechi Nwakali is one of the talented Midfield prospects in the World Football at the moment. if you didn’t know that, now you do. I am glad I was able to educate you on some football knowledge it seems you and a lot of our National team scouts need the knowledge. Thank you god bless Super Eagles

Mikel performed a lot better in the last game playing in the DM position. He brought a huge balance to the midfield. I hope the wrist injury doesn’t prevent him from playing against Argentina.

On a lighter note, there’s something I don’t like about the picture where Kanu and Mikel are shaking hands. Mikel’s disposition is as though they were peers. Mikel, you no dey fear? Una no be mates o! Kanu is a confirmed Super Eagles legend. We no dey take am play lol. Along with the likes of Jay Jay, and several members of the 94 set.

I thought I was the only only one who read meaning to that posture. It’s a still picture and you could argue that it may not tell all the story but I was abit put off. You’ve got to respect your legend. Messi won’t do that to Diego Amando Maradona…even if he wins the World Cup. Kanu won everything Mikel won- CL, Europa (UEFA), FA and even added laurels from Olympics, Dutch league etc.

They are both great Nigerians that we are all proud of. That’s the way tough men do it. We loved them both equally and unconditionally.

  • well for me no problem with Mikel’s injury. if he is injured let Ogu play in His stead and I believe we are still good to go that way. This might just be the time for Ogu to show us what he is actually made off. but please!!! we don’t want Onazi ooooooo!!. ehn.

    • Daniel 3 years ago

Ogu to play mikel role, you understand what you aresaying at all, do you remember when mikel didnt play algeria in the world cup qualifier, Ogu play and scored, do you see how it seems something was missing and after losing our first match the changes Rohr made for the second game against Iceland, Mikel was always there despite everything that the coach should make him sit for next match, he changed his position instead and the coach didnt include the mighty Iwobi, you are saying Ogu should play instead of Mikel, rather you should pray another player should be injured like Ndidi, Etebo, Moses, cause we have replacement for them and not Mikel, do you remember what Iceland Coach said about Mikel that they didnt meet him in his usual role, if Mikel is injured, its as good as being kicked out of the tournament, cause Nigeria super eagles is Mikel

  • @Ugo Iwunze it is you that your brain capacity should tell that Nwakali is been over hype by you guys. Nobody is saying Nwakali is not good but let’s him ripe enough for his time. This is a player that couldn’t even command a regular shirt at VV Venlo until he was shipped out to second division in dutch leaque. Even if he has work permit he will still be loan out because he can’t bench anybody in that Arsenal team. Guys sentiment apart Nwakali is not needed in super eagles team at the moment

  • Abdul andah 3 years ago

@tay:no reason am that way, that guy (kelechi nwakali) is the Nigerian best offensive Midfielder by all miles now o.
E no really laced shoe for vvv venlo no mean say the guy no good fa!
Playing matches for any club in the foreign land many things are involved o…
If the guy is an Englishman am sure he will be playing for a premiership club by now!

  • Sunnyb 3 years ago

Tayo, you again must you comment on every topic here. If don’t have any meaningful contribution I suggest you should continue playing with your video games.By the way Nwakali is our best attacking midfielder as of today. The chap is seriously underrated.

  • Like seriously?  Why do we love to go backwards?  Nwakali is good but sorry my people, he’s not in d camp at the moment and Mikel is 50-50, whom should we use? Period!

  • Jones 3 years ago

Please you people are overhyping this Nwakali guy. He’s just a little above average.

  • Go Eagles, Go 3 years ago

Is it because of a player that is not in the Super Eagles team that some guys are calling others names? Some people are unstable from the way they easily get flared up when a contrary comments are made. Some people should grow up. Seriously!! Kelechi Nwakeli is a Nigerian but as of today he is not a Super Eagles player. We should be talking about how to beat Argentina for you never know if at all the coach is summing up all these suggestions and compare with what his technical crew’s advice.

I was watching when Iceland was playing against Argentina, they had 3 players forming “C” in front of Messi when he was with the ball. Although it was used first (who bright it to popularity) by The Special One when he was in Inter Milan. That is defensive style we can apply during our game. Messi is 31 years of age and he knows he can do play like when he was 23. Not under rating the other players but, they are normal.

Our formation should be 3-5-2, it will work against the Argentines.

The 5 in the middle could form the C needed to reduce the impact Messi.

The players should forget about their personal revenge mission and play like a disciplined team. There playing will be around Messi and he needs to be blocked.

Please, no waiting for second half before the shoot at goal.

    Good luck Naija
