Rohr Set To Drop Seven World Cup Eagles From Squad For Sycheĺles Clash

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, has hinted that about seven players who made the 23 man squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia may not be invited for the AFCON qualifier against Seychelles billed for September 8, Completesportsnjgeria.com reports.

Rohr who stayed back in Europe after the Eagles exited the World Cup in the first round, has evealed his plan to bring in some fringe players who could not make the world cup team, according to an official at the NFF secretariat in Abuja.

“Coach Rohr has remained in Europe to monitor our players and scout some emerging stars with the view to capping them and he has also hinted at his plan to drop some world cup Eagles because of injuries, loss of form or for tactical reasons,” our source who requested anonymity told Completesportsnigefia.com in Abuja

“He would have been here to submit his world cup report, but had to stay back because of the leadership tussle at the NFF, but all things being equal, Rohr may be in the country next week to submit his report and release his squad list for the Seychelles game in September”

Completesportsniggeria.com also gathered that Kelechi Nwakali who is on loan at Porto from Arsenal is among the new players to be called up, while Tyrone Ebuehi and skipper Mikel Obi may be dropped due to their injury situation . Joel Obi, Elderson Echiejile, and possibly Odion Ighalo and Ogenyi Onazi may be excluded to give new breeds a chance to grow.

Igbayilaro. So, this man was sleeping when he made his final squad for this year world cup? Fingers crossed. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • Mba, why must Joel Obi be dropped? He is playing in Seria A for heaven sake.
And Odion Ighalo is the most potent and lethal Nigerian striker at the moment. Even Sadio Mane is not as good as Ighalo.
Onazi deserves another chance. Ndidi is in his shadow.
I demand that these players are invited without delay.

    • No b only demand.na cement

My guy, be like say you dey kukuland. Ighalo has scored 4 in 22 for super eagles. One goal in every 5 games.
Onyekuru and Akinyemi score one in two games and are out hottest strike force.
Nwakali did more in the world cup warm up game than Joel has done in seven years for the Super Eagles.
Ndidi is one of the hottest midfield players there is.
Onazi’s last good game for SE was 4 years ago in 2014 against France

        • Mba, I no agree. Joel Obi is better than Cesc Fabrigas and Ngolo Kante put together. Mbappe is not in the same class with Ighalo. And Onazi is still father to Ndidi.

    • Ezekiel 4 years ago

Odion had played 9 matches for Nigeria and did not score a goal. Why must he not be dropped. Let him go and let Nwakali play

    • Guy he be like say you chop shit, even a new born baby will pick mane before Ighalo, mind you Premiership is not China league oo

pls Mr best  coach  don’t drop them, we don’t have alternatives for now. Rohr.Biko invite them.pls ignore all those new youngsters, they are too young

  • It’s quite right to have a healthy robust and broad debate on this matter.

Putting the dissapoiment of the world cup and rather indifferent, some would say poor, showings of certain players aside, it would not be wrong for Rohr to hand invitation to players based on their present forms.

The likes of Ighalo, Onazi and Joel Obi are still available for selection and should righly be considered for upcoming matches if their club forms are scintillating.

It pains me to say this but sentiment should give way to pragmatism in my view when it comes to squad selection.

    una don start abi?

    He must invite Etebo

  • Jay daniel 4 years ago

Rohr please wake up after your failure at the world cup in Russia,  you just have to bring few players and not to change the squad we are not rebuidling for now pls God bless super eagles

  • By all means drop them. We need fresh blood, players who are ready to go all the hog.

The injection of players like Samuel Kalu, Simon MOSES, Kelechi NWakali,Akinyemi Adeleke, Mike Agu,to ne just a few will help bolster them and are it formidable.
There are many players who re on the fringes of the nat team who are deserving of national team invitation, these should be identified and integrated into the national team with out ruling out experience players too.
A sprinkle of the lad who featured against Atletico Madrid should be given a look in, notably The NWAKALI brothers, Usman Muhammed
Also Jr LOKOSA of KANO pillars, the leading scorer in NPL should have another opportunity to fight for a shirt.
Umar Sadiq, Oviedo Ejaria of Rangers fc are great prospects for the nat team.

In the new look Super Eagles, I wish to see IWobi,Etebo and Ndidi partnership.

While Fc PORTO loanee with Team B, Kelechi NWAKALI and Gent Fc strong man Esiti Anderson stand by. John OGU’s experience would be valuable to the national team, he offers a lot ofleadership strengths with the imminent absence of MIKEL given his clinical commitment an. League distance.

We expect to the OYIBO wall of BALOGUN and Ekong
To continue to wax stronger with experienced OMeruo
    And upcoming Awaziem
Providing cover in their absence, a good addition to these centre halves would be appreciated.

In the goal keeping depth, it would be a great joy to see Dele Ajiboye given a chance he deserves between the sticks for NIGERIA.

    • bigdaf 4 years ago

I would like to see Akinyemi Adeleke and Henry Onyekuru and maybe Anthony Nwakaeme on standby supporting Ahmed Musa in the number 9 and 10. Those 2 (AA and HO) are our most potent strikers in 2018 (score twice as many goals as Iheanacho, S Nwaknwo and Ighalo)

Midfield, I’d like to see Samuel Kalu, Moses Simon, Kingsley Sokari and Kelechi Nwakali come in to provide strength in depth along side Etebo, Ndidi and John Ogu. Esiti and Uche Agbo can be standby as they can also convert to cover for defence. Finally defence is good with Troost/Balogun/Omeruo. On the bench with Awaziem, Ezeh, C Nwakali covering.

    • bigdaf 4 years ago

Unfortunately U Mohammed, S Umar are not consistent with their teams and they blow hot and cold. they should work on putting some consistency into their game. We shouldn’t populate the squad with people who sit on the bench in their clubs. Junior Lokosa is not ready. I think we should go on goals scored in 2018 as well as number of games per goal and last time scored (condition of player and fitness/ match fit

      • Onyekuru has shown he’s got something up his sleeve and I feel this is rhe best time to make him feel welcome to get the best from him having paid his dues at the club level. Though he lacks strong physicality required in Africa football he makes up for with speed, guile, skills, great techniques.Bring on Anthony Nwakeme will surely help to bring balance in the the attack with his aerial dominance and big frame to hold up play for other pint-size players like Simon moses, Henry Onyekwuru

        • Bigdaf 4 years ago

Yes Onyekuru and Akinyemi vying for number 10 with Nwakaeme and Musa
vying for number 9 depending on how the match goes. Simon/Etebor attacking from the left with Kalu/V Moses attacking from the right. Nwakali/Ajagun pulling the strings in the middle. Ndidi/Esiti covering the defence. With Agbo on standby in case of injuries We still have B Idowu/Mohd Musa left back and O Aina/Sokari as right back

@Kelechi, where is it heard that people tell their neighbors where the source of their wealth is. They make it a top secret. Dangote. Liver Brothers. Microsoft. Amazon. Shell. Chevron. Facebook. Twitters. Instagram. Whatsapp. Toyota. LG. Samsung. Sunny. DSTV. Glo. Emzo. CNN. These guard their secret so much so that any technology thief is killed, not reported to the police. So @Kelechi you are a 419 and the other things used to call you.

  • Djeniko 4 years ago

This is non news. It is not a new thing. New players will be invited to all the 32 teams that were in Russia 2018. From France to Saudi Arabia. Even those that didn’t smell Russia will also invite new players from those newly discovered, some were overlooked and some improved tremendously to be invited. So Gernot Rohr is on point. No one should make any unnecessary issue out of this. It is only when he has invited we can start to criticize and recommend. Let’s watch for now.

  • Chairmanfemi 4 years ago

CSN has already listed possible 6 and the last is Shehu Abdulahi(He’s also injured). So our Top 2 RB are out and should be replaced by Ola Aina and Musa Mohammed. The remaining Five to be added are: Akinyemi(CF), Kelechi Nwakali, Moses Simon, Samuel Kalu and a Left back or Henry Onyekuru.

    • Bigdaf 4 years ago

Onyekuru/Akinyemi can both be in the squad vying for one position. Our two hottest strikers pushing each other for a place in the first team knowing that there is someone just as dangerous who can take their place permanently. That is what all successful teams do. Two players for every position competing for a starting spot.

  • The super Eagles need a natural left footed left full back or wing-back. It is really surprising that with all the players we have both home and abroad we can’t get at least two natural left footed defender’s. I think this affected us during the world cup as the right footed left full backs couldn’t get crosses in from their position. Gernot Rohr should be tasked to get left footed defenders for the super Eagles. There are many of them in the league. And also aboard. Someone like Stanley amuzie still plays in Switzerland. We could start with him while looking for more left footed players.

    • Looking for option in the left back of the defence, I think the experience of Joel Obi, a natural left footed player will come in handy for Nigeria Super Eagles.
Rather than fruitlessly trying to fit Joel in the middle of the team, where the likes of Ndidi,Agu,Etebo, Ogu compete for place, he would be better deplored in the left side of the defence, being a versertile player with a lot of quality to add to the Super Eagles side.
Joel Obi is quick, adventurous with deft touches and amazing football sense, these with his defensive qualities being a left footed player will help him adapt seamlessly in the role.

I reckon that our coach crew should have seen deplored Joel Obi in this role a way back while he’s being considered in the star studded midfield.

      • bigdaf 4 years ago

Thats one of our biggest problems. Square pegs in round holes. Playing people out of position rather than looking who is best at each position. Could that be the reason Joel has never been able to do anything positive in 7 years of playing for the Super Eagles?

Moses Simon uses both feet, John Ogu is left footed, both already in the team/squad

  • Jensen Josh 4 years ago

Finally we won’t see players like Brian ldowu who can’t join attack in super squad again poor cross,no agility nothing, and arugbo like Joel obi and Chinese product ighalo…
Simeone tall man who can’t make use of his height, don’t know why you will invite a certain player that relegated with Crotone to SE…

Why call on shehu when musa Muhammed is a perfect option, we need quality strikers who knw what to do with the ball and score not player who will miss a golden opportunity for us entering into WC next round and start to agitate for penalty…. Hiss Good for nothing who don’t know what it takes to be in the national colours
