Akinyemi, who was 20 last June scored four of the five goals FK Ventspils when they hosted Albanian side, Luftëtari FC in the first leg of their Europa League tie on June 12 while the fifth goal was also scored by another Nigerian,Tosin Aiyegun.
In the return leg, Akinyemi scored a brace while midfielder,Abdullahi Alfa scored the third for Ventspils to end scores 3-3 and ensured his club qualified to meet Bordeaux 8-3 on aggregate.

In the reverse fixture last week, the six-times Latvian champion lost 1-0 to the visitors with all three Nigerians in action.

Coach Dejan Vukicevic will be banking on his Nigerian imports to produce the magic that saw them hit eight goals in just two goals last month in the same competition while Rohr will be seeking to add new players to his squad ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game in September against Seychelles.

    Good development.
We are in need of a prolific striker who can kick the ball in the net.Since our big strikers have let us down let’s turn to smaller ones who knows,a goalscorer could emerge from an unexpected destination.
Rohr,we are counting on you to put smiles back in our faces.
We trust you to do that.
    God bless Nigeria.

  • Dis news is some how infuriating, wats de meanig of hunting for young players and at de end he wil invite anyone, even if he do, he wil still bench them.

I dont know wat kind of country is this, wen other ones like egypt argentina all sack their good coaches but we cant jux sack diz mistake fada. He is incopetent

  • Sometimes I just have to agree with @Iluwa’s frustration because I remember the Italian Nigerian Sami that was taken to the WC. This guy is by far better than Odion Ighalo but he was benched. That guy has eyes for and on goals but he was not use. I am beginning to doubt the know-how of Gernot Rohr. I will never forget the vs Argentina match. A mere secondary school football fan will remember that after the equalizing and 10 minutes remaining, you park the bus and do all sorts of pranks Neymar style. So painful. Now he is traveling to France for some free scoring Nigerians. Will the big boys allow him to use them? A coach who allow his players to influence him on big occasions like the WC should be critically reappraised.

@Oluwa, yioma dafun yin ti opo fa. You see, we all can’t have the same views because, that is why we called different names but what really matters in life is staying positive at all times.

For this reason, I have no hope in this coach anymore. What else does he have to show to us that he hasn’t shown us before? I will keep my fingers crossed. I wish coach Rohr good luck. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • No problems with inviting a 20 year old so long as Coach Rohr doesn’t then blame future shortcomings on his “young team”.

This coach keeps provoking me, it is not all about watching and inviting these young boys and at the end drop them on the way or even use them as bench warmers. Lets learn from these european countries and start playing our younger boys. Klyian mbappe is now known world wide because he was given the chance to perform. This coach should stop using the big boys that money has killed their brain, the goal ighalo missed in at the world cup against argentina can never be missed by some strikers on the nigeria premier league.
