Rohr: Super Eagles Focus Is On South Africa, Not Cameroun

By Kayode Ogundare:

Technical Adviser of the Nigeria senior national team, Gernort Rohr, has declared that he's not thinking about the World Cup qualifying doubleheader between the Super Eagles and reigning African Champions, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun at the moment, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Rather, he says he is more concerned and focused on the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in June as that fixture represents a more pressing danger to the future of Nigerian football than the World Cup qualifiers which are not due until August.

"I understand that Nigerians are concerned about our progress to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but don't forget that we have not qualified for the AFCON since 2013 and the crucial game against South Africa is in June, so I want to focus on that," Rohr states during a chat with CNN completesportsnigeria.com.

The German reasons that a good showing against South Africa will also serve as a morale-booster when the Indomitable Lions come calling in August.

"We have six months between now and August when we play Cameroun. Between now and then we are going to play two friendly games, as well as the qualifier against South Africa. If we do well in those games, it will help our confidence against Cameroun," Rohr says.

Rohr  is also upbeat about the Super Eagles chances of qualifying for the AFCON after serving as a pundit at Gabon 2017.

"I was at the AFCON in Gabon and I now realise what it means to be at the tournament. We also want to play at the AFCON and we must do everything possible to be there," he reckons.

The Super Eagles are drawn in Group E of the AFCON qualifiers with South Africa, Seychelles and Libya while they top Group B of the World Cup qualifying Africa section with six points ahead of Cameroun with two points while Zambia and Algeria have one point each.

The game against Cameroun is scheduled for Uyo on the 28 of August with the return leg in Yaounde five days later.
