Manchester United forced a dominant Southampton to a 0-0 draw at St.Mary’s in their penultimate game of the 2016/2017 Premier League season.
United played on the back foot in most parts of the game but had their goalkeeper Sergio Romero to thank as he made brilliant saves to keep his team in the game and posted a man-of-the-match performance.
The draw means United has gone five straight games without a win.
United remain sixth on 66 points in the league table and Southampton occupy the eighth position on 46 points.
Southampton had the perfect chance to take the lead in the sixth minute but Manolo Gabbiadini’s penalty was saved by Romero after Eric Bailly was judged to have handled the ball which video replays showed was outside the box.
Two minutes later Bailly almost made amends for giving away the penalty when he went on a mazy run only to see his left-foot shot punched away by Fraser Forster.
In the 15th minute, United went close through Anthony Martial following a brilliant pass from Wayne Rooney but the French forward shot wide off target.
Southampton had a chance in the 19th minute but James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick flew narrowly wide of United’s goal.
On the stroke of half time Nathan Redmond played a neat one-two with Steven Davies on the edge of United’s box and hit a low shot which took a slight deflection off Marouane Fellaini and was well saved by Romero.
In the 52nd minute Southampton won a free-kick close to United’s box following a foul on Cedric Soares by Phil Jones but Dusan Tadic’s left-foot strike was punched away by Romero.
Southampton continued to edge the early part of the second half and were almost rewarded on 56 minutes again Romero made a superb save palming away Oriol Romeo’s shot from range.
Romero was called to action again in the 59th minute as he dived full length to palm away Ward-Prowse curler away for a corner.
United had a chance to broke in the 64th minute but Rooney’s ball across Southampton’s goal evaded everybody.
A minute later Juan Mata sent a curler which went inches wide off target following a laid on pass from Rooney inside the box.
Ward-Prowse was presented with a big chance on 71 minutes but his volley from Redmond’s cross was blocked by Jones.
It was the turn of United to attack and they were unlucky not to go a goal up on 72 minutes as Martial’s curler off a brilliant solo run came off the post.
In the 81st minute substitute Jay Rodriguez beat the offside trap only to see his shot go agonisingly wide off target.
Southampton went close again to breaking the deadlock on 83 minute but Sofiane Boufal blazed his effort inside the box over the bar.
