Cristiano Ronaldo continued his impressive run of form by hitting the back of the net four times as Real Madrid defeated Girona 6-3 in a Spanish LaLiga clash on Sunday
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has now scored 17 goals in his last eight games across all competitions and now has 22 league goals this season, just three fewer than top scorer Lionel Messi.
The Portuguese forward put the home team ahead in the 11th minute, steering home Toni Kroos’ cross into the bottom far corner.
The hosts had a goal ruled out for offside in the 23rd minute when Lucas Vazquez’s effort was wrongly chalked off with replays showing the Spaniard was actually onside although Ronaldo’s presence in an offside position may well have confused the linesman.
Five minutes later, Girona stunned the home fans by grabbing the equaliser through Christian Stuani.
Madrid regained the lead three minutes after break with Ronaldo finishing off a fine team move.
Vazquez finished another flowing team move in the 59th minute to put the game beyond the hosts.
It took the hosts five minutes to get another goal with Ronaldo slamming the ball home again after the Girona goalkeeper initially saved Karim Benzema’s shot. The goal marked Ronaldo’s 50th career hat-trick.
Stuani reduced the deficit for Girona with his second of the evening in the 67th minute. He went past Dani Carvajal and diverted a header past Keylor Navas.
Any hope of a late fightback by Girona went off in the air when Gareth Bale netted Real Madrid’s fifth goal of the game four minutes before the end.
There was however time for Girona score another goal with Junape scoring his side’s third in the 87th minute.
Ronaldo scored the game’s last goal in injury time.
