It was not a winning return to the FIFA World Cup for Peru since the 1982 edition in Spain as they lost 1-0 to Denmark in a Group C clash on Saturday.
The hero for Denmark was Yussuf Poulsen who put away Christian Eriksen’s through pass to give his side the lead on 59th minute and eventually the win.
It was a positive return to the World Cup for Denmark who missed the 2014 edition held in Brazil.
Peru dominated most of the game but could not put away scoring chances and also could not get past an impressive Kasper Schmeichel in goal for Denmark.
Denmark were dealt an early blow in the 36th minute as William Kvist went off injured and was replaced by Lasse Schone.
Peru had the chance to take the lead on the stroke of half-time after they were awarded a penalty following confirmation from the Video Assistant Referee over a foul by Yussuf Poulsen on Christian Cueva.
Unfortunately Cueva failed to beat Schmeichel from the penalty spot as he blasted his effort over the bar.
Up next for Denmark is a clash against Australia on Thursday while Peru will take on France also on Thursday.
In the group’s first game, France edged Australia 2-1 with Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba scoring for the French.
