A brace from Harry Kane secured a hard-fought 2-1 win against Tunisia in Group G of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Monday.
England got off to a good start thanks to skipper Kane who pounced on a rebound from a cornerkick to give his side a 1-0 lead.
Tunisia were back on level terms in the 35th minute through Ferjani Sassi who converted from the penalty spot after a foul by Kyle Walker.
But in the 91st minute Kane scored the winning goal as he headed in an assist from Harry Maguire off a corner.
The last time both teams met at the World Cup was at the 1998 edition in France with England winning 2-0.
The win was England’s third win in six meetings against an African team (three draws) at the World Cup after defeating Cameroon 3-2 at the 1990 World Cup and 2-0 against Tunisia at France 1998.
The result means all four African teams who have played at this World Cup have lost. Egypt lost to Uruguay, Morocco lost Iran, Nigeria lost to Croatia.
England’s next game is against debutant Panama on Sunday while Tunisia will take on Belgium on Saturday.
In the group’s other game played also on Monday, Belgium thrashed Panama 3-0 with Manchester United’s striker Romelu Lukaku scoring two goals.Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
