Mathew Ryan has revealed he gave Brighton a glowing report about former team-mate Martin Montoya before the Seagulls signed him. The Albion keeper knows Montoya well from their time together in Spain at Valencia and he’s revealed he was approached by the club to check on his credentials before the deal was concluded on deadline day last Thursday.
Ryan said he had no hesitation to recommend the defender and he’s glad the 27-year-old is now on board at the Amex.
He said on the Brighton website: “Obviously with him being a former team-mate of mine, they approached me and asked what I thought about him both as a person and player. I told them my opinions, which were all positive.
“I think he’ll be a great addition to the squad and thankfully for us it all panned out in the end and we managed to get him.
“I contacted him [Montoya] to let him know the direction the club is going in and what it offers in terms of the stadium and training ground.
“I spoke about it being a good club on the rise and he liked what he heard. I tried to give him as much information as possible.”
Ryan believes Montoya will fit in well at Brighton and will be a great addition to the squad, both on and off the pitch.
He added: “He is all-round good guy, but when he needs to put his mind on the job, he does it. I don’t have a bad word to say about him and I’m very excited to have him at the club.”
