S/African Ref To Officiate Esperance, Al-Merrikh Match

South African match official Daniel Bennett will be in charge of of the second leg, second round CAF Champions League match between Esperance de Tunis and Al-Merrikh in Rades next month.

Bennett will be joined by fellow South Africans Sandile Dilikane and Sello Moshidi, who will be running the lines, while Lwandile Mfiki will be the fourth official.

SAFA confirmed that Dilikane comes in as a late replacement for Zakhele Siwela, who was initially appointed to be the first assistant referee.

Siwela had to withdraw as he will be busy with preparations for the FIFA U-20 Youth World Cup, which will be held in New Zealand from 30 May.

Furthermore, Ian McLeod will be the match commissioner in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the game between TP Mazembe and Stade Malien in Lubumbashi.

“We have always maintained that we have some of the best match officials on the
continent, and that is the reason why our officials are forever in demand in CAF
competitions,” said SAFA Head of Referees Peter Sejake in a statement released by the association.

“Most of these guys continue flying the South African flag high across the continent. This helps with their developments as international match officials.

“It also puts them in good stead when it comes to appointments for FIFA tournaments.”

Al-Merrikh take a 1-0 lead to Tunisia while Mazembe will be favourites to advance to the group stages following a 2-2 draw in Bamako.
