Saints Star ‘Proud’ Of England Debut

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy admits it was an ‘unbelievable experience’ as he made his England debut against the USA on Thursday. The 28-year-old has enjoyed an impressive year, as he has gone from being the backup goalkeeper at Southampton to a regular feature in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

That culminated in McCarthy making his Three Lions debut as a half-time substitute during Thursday’s 3-0 international friendly victory over the United States, a match where he did not have much to do, as England ran out comfortable winners.

Nevertheless, it was a day to remember for the former Reading player and he confirmed it was an ‚Äėunbelievable experience’ to pull on the Three Lions jersey for the first time.

“Obviously it’s an unbelievable experience, as a kid I grew up dreaming of playing for England and finally got to put that shirt on so it is a very proud moment for me and my family,” McCarthy was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

McCarthy is unlikely to add a second cap to his name during Sunday’s UEFA Nations League clash with Croatia at Wembley, but he will be hoping to maintain his fine form with Southampton so he can challenge Jordan Pickford for the number one jersey over the coming months.

Despite Southampton’s struggles so far this season, McCarthy has still been an impressive performer, keeping clean sheets in the recent draws with Bournemouth and Newcastle.
