Carlos Sainz is looking forward to joining McLaren and he expects the team to respond after their recent struggles. Sainz will join McLaren on a two-year deal from Renault ahead of the 2019 season, where he will partner rookie driver Lando Norris in a new-look line-up for the Woking outfit.
“A driver needs confidence and if a team gives you two years it means they really trust you and believe in you,” the Spanish star told Sky Sports.
“This is my first time in F1 that I will have a two-year contract. It gives me stability and it gives me confidence.”
Historically McLaren are the second most successful team in F1, behind Ferrari, but their last Drivers’ Championship win came a decade ago and it is 20 years since they have claimed the constructors’ prize.
McLaren haven’t managed a podium finish since the opening race of the 2014 season but Sainz feels there are already encouraging signs and he hopes they can improve in 2019.
He added: “The team have had a tough year and they have learnt from it. There has been the clear reaction of a team which wants to get back to winning ways.”Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
