Sam Sodje: Eagles Must Take Games As Cup Finals

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has admonished players of the Super Eagles to take their remaining games in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as Cup finals.

Stephen Keshi’s team lost 3-2 to the Red Devils of Congo at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar on Saturday to put their chances of defending the Africa Cup of Nations title in jeopardy.

Sodje while speaking with after the game believes the team can still qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations despite the poor start by the Eagles.

“Seriously, that was not a good news at all,” the one-time Frangers of Warri centre back starts.

“I have to say that this result puts the team under pressure, as well as being a motivation for them as they prepare for the game against South Africa next week.

“Now, we need to take every game as a Cup final. This is the time for the players with big hearts to stand up and be counted,” Sodje stresses.

Sodje however sues for calm among the Nigerian fans ahead of the Eagles’ next game against the Bafana Bafana in four days time in Cape Town.

“I have been speaking as a fan from a ‘fresh wound’. As a player, I wish that the fans calm down and not put the team under so much pressure. Maybe this is what the Super Eagles and the NFF need to wake up,” the former Charlton Athletic defender conclude.
