Portugal coach Fernando Santos has given credit to his country’s fans for cheering the team to Euro 2016 glory.
Santos’ side defeated hosts France 1-0 on Sunday to win their first ever senior title.
Substitute Eder scored the winner in extra time against a dominant France side.
“Wherever we’ve gone there have always been Portuguese fans. This lifted our souls,” Santos said at his post-match press conference.
The former Portugal coach also praised captain Cristiano Ronaldo, although the Real Madrid superstar limped off injured after only 24 minutes.
Santos added: “Our skipper put in an immense effort; he has amazing team spirit.”
