Saracens have confirmed Maro Itoje will be sidelined for a “number of weeks” after suffering a knee injury. The England lock was hurt on international duty during the autumn internationals and scans have revealed a chip in his patella.
“Maro Itoje will be sidelined for a number of weeks after suffering a knee injury,” Saracens said in a statement. “The 24-year-old took a knock whilst on international duty with England, and scans have revealed a chip in his patella”
It is not yet known if Itoje’s Six Nations participation is under threat but his absence would be a huge blow for Eddie Jones, whose England side open their campaign against Ireland in Dublin on February 2.
Saracens, however, are boosted by the return of Itoje’s England and British & Irish Lions Test colleague Mako Vunipola for Sunday’s Champions Cup clash against Cardiff Blues at Allianz Park.
Vunipola has not played since October because of a calf strain sustained in Saracens’ European victory at Glasgow, missing England’s autumn internationals, but he will start against the Welsh side.
