Serbia End Super Eagles Unbeaten Friendlies Run

Serbia End Super Eagles Unbeaten Friendlies Run

By James Agberebi:
The Super Eagles were brought down to earth after their win against Poland last Friday as they lost 2-0 to Serbia in their second friendly game in London on Tuesday night.
The Super Eagles had also beaten Argentina in another friendly in Russia in November but they were no match for Serbia on Tuesday night.
A brace from Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic in the second half gave Serbia the win.

It was a game the Serbians dominated from start to finish and deservedly won.

The game saw young goalkeeper Francis Uzoho keep his place while the likes of Ahmed Musa, Chidozie, Ogenyi Onazi, Tyronne Ebuehi, Bryan Idowu all started for the Super Eagles.

Also, Al Ahly striker Junior Ajayi made his debut of the Super Eagles when he came on late in the game.

Zenith Ziva

Uzoho made the first save on eight minutes as he palmed away Mitrovic’s shot close to the edge of the box.

In the 11th minute, Victor Moses took a surprise low shot but Vladimir Stojkovic got down well to parry the shot away for a corner.

Serbia thought they had opened scoring on 14 minutes following an effort from a corner through Mitrovic which looked to have crossed the line but Uzoho quickly retrieved the ball.

Replays showed the ball had crossed the line but referee Craig Pawson waved play on.
Serbia had another chance on 18 minutes from another corner but William Troost-Ekong cleared the ball before it crossed the line.

Uzoho was called to action again in the 26th minute as he quickly got down to stop a goal bound low shot.

In the 28th minute, Alex Iwobi tried a shot close to the 18-yard box which went just wide off target following good work from Victor Moses.

With five minutes remaining in the first half, Filip  Kostic found space on the right side but saw his left-foot shot hit the side netting.

The Super Eagles made the game’s first substitution with Odion Ighalo replacing Moses at the start of the second half.

Former Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic had a good chance to put Serbia ahead on 60 minutes after he was left unmarked from a corner only to see his strike end up in the hands of Uzoho.

Ighalo should have given the Super Eagles the lead on 64 minutes after holding off his marker inside the box but his goal-bound strike took a slight deflection on the Serbian keeper and went just over the bar for a corner.

Serbia eventually broke the deadlock on 68 minutes through Mitrovic who finished off a left-foot cross after the Super Eagles defenders failed to clear their lines.

Few minutes later Ighalo had a chance to level the score but did not connect properly with the ball after doing well to turn his marker inside the box.

In the 81st minute, Serbia doubled their lead with Mitrovic again getting on the score sheet as he slotted past Uzoho from close range off another cross from the left.

Wow interesting the defeat came at the right time. Argentina currently lose with 6-1. Argentina is finished.nigeria we need a striker

  • femisymphony 4 years ago

All what we lacked in the last 2 games
    1. Our midfield is dead
    2. Can’t string passes
    3. Lack creative initiative

  • Nicolsen 4 years ago

Very poor display frm d SE. No partern, No tactics, no game plan. Pls we need a striker, Igalo is a joke lets try Cyril Desser. am also not comfortable wt d goal keeper and defender Awzim (no 20)

    • My brother who can get me direct line to Mr Rohr.? I need to talk to him about this Desser Cyril. Forumites please watch that boy on youtube and join me in this crusade to get him to play for SE. He is quick, skilful and scores goal with ease. He also takes risk as a striker. If we dont get this type of player then we must forget W.Cup. The only way is to revert to two strikers because with the 4 3 3 formation, our lone striker is always isolated.

  • They played woefully. No playmaker and coordination in the midfield. 3 defensive minded midfielder cannot run the show without a playmaker. Can we now see Shehu Abdullahi is better than Tyrone Ebuehi in big games? He could not hold play today. Strikers also performed woefully. Without Mikel and Moses, no super eagles. Moses has been the one scoring the goals and carrying us since the days of Keshi. We need players that can hold there own with skills in that midfield. John Ogu should have been brought in since the start of second half. Not a good performance overall

Our midfield is nothing to right home abt… for those clamouring for joel obi in SE, there u have it..

    • Ayphillydegreat 4 years ago

He played well in the first half. Maybe tired out in the second half. It takes intelligence for someone who haven’t been in the team for that long to blend with the team the way he’d been doing and it’s not going to be that perfect. For what he’s doing so far he should be on the plane to Russia. Ebuehi is just coming off an injury and he played 90 minutes. Haba! Give them some slack. The team is still evolving and there still some work to do, but these are just friendlies.

      • nice comment bro..many Nigerian football fans are not football fns but mere football watchers…u see their comments go from an all high to an low whenever the team lost..we all know what is lacking in the team presently and I trust rohr is working really hard to improve things…before now half of those commenting today never had an interest in watching the eagles until rohr came on board…he gave us an eagle team we where always craving to watch and also had hope in…this is a friendly match for crying out loud..notes will be taken….prior o USA 94 we only won against Georgia most of our displays in friendlies were lethargic and when the tournament proper came we saw a different and better eagles..i still blive in the team and I blive by the time they go into proper campin in may we will see a better team in Russia

  • Crown_man 4 years ago

That midfield lacks proper coordination & the defensive department is somehow not balanced. Ebuehi seemed to have manage his footing in that match, he’s not fit… A lot to say, Iwobi shines, & was forced to be traveling post to post because of the midfield department porosity. And the attack; No be am I beg. Mikel Obi was greatly missed I beg, and we need really need a sharpshooter!
Well, its just a test game. My conclusion!

  • Chima E Samuels 4 years ago

Chigozie Chigozie you guys are now quiet up next is desser Nigeria we always over hype everything…..

    1. This was more of individuals playing together, rather as a team. One on one, Nigeria have more skilful players, but Serbia were more cohesive as a team.

    2. Unlike Serbia, Nigeria lacked initiative in the final third & were often bereft of ideas on how to get the ball into the net.

    3. As someone said up there, Mikel & Moses are the engine room of SE. Without them in the team, incisive, probing creativity is missing & chances of a win is 1/5. With them, it’s 3/5.

    4. Tyrone Ebuehi may be more skilful than Shehu Abdillahi, but Shehu is a more experienced player who can hold play & spray intelligent passes.

    5. It’s clear why Leicester never really had high opinions of Musa. Skilful striker but not deadly. Has bad positioning sense as a striker.

    6. Our goalkeeping crisis is a grenade waiting to explode. Uzoho is still raw. If we don’t sort this out, we might be roasted at the World Cup, where it is more serious business.

    7. At the back, the regulars should start please. Awaziem & Tyrone can keep learning.

    8. Rohr has still not got the right blend in midfield & upfront. Only the back is settled with Balogun, Shehu, Ekong & Idowu/Echiejile. Goalkeeping too needs a serious look in.

    9. That Hive stadium is substandard for the quality of team expression. Small, poor camera coverage & noisy, overconfident Nigerian fans distracting everyone.

    10. Nigeria will get it right soon & will beat this Serbian team in a World Cup match proper.

Well Joel and ebuehi might just have an off day tonight… but I think uzoho and moses did well… No goalkeeper could do more than that…. Men that guy awaziem dissapoint me Ooo… I think omeruo is a better back up for the oyinbo wall… And Rohr should stick with moses Simon and Victor on the wing.. Maybe Onazi-ndidi pairing not too bad with Mikel or iwobi as a no 10 playmaker… And all we need now is a great striker… Ighalo is a better back up..
Maybe dessers, Martins, adi and Ajayi should get their chances now

  • Ojo Samuel 4 years ago

@kel u got everything right… Except no 6…i still have faith in this uzoho… So called ejide and Co could not have done better… And as u said truly…. We lack serious team play… Yet to blend

I don’t see the reasons for fans being negative. This was a test match and the Coach sounded it very clearly that he wasn’t desperate to win.
    His line up showed it.
I was quick to react, saying, “Yawaa Dey..”
What do u expect trying out your bench?
Almighty Argentina just got beaten blue & black by Spain. A 1-6 scoreline is no play. Will u kill the Coach?
We have too many negative comments & toxic ppl in Nigeria. Some can’t see anything good in Nigeria while others just vent their frustration on others.
It was clear Nigeria will lose fielding Onazi as Captain is bad omen anytime. My opinion.
Onazi is heavy. Musa is unintelligent & Ighalo is all brawn & no goals.
Uzoho is young and still coming up. Why blame Tyrone, or Awaziem when the midfield had collapsed?
How do u intend to drop players if they have not failed?
Let us be more positive. Eagles are a work in progress.

The whole idea of friendlies is to see first hand your weaknesses and find solutions. Sure there are deficiencies in the team and we are never going to have a perfect team but so long as we play as a team in Russia believe me all, we shall go far. We have a good strong team.

  • Wen eating a food and some suddenly cal wc group D please leave de food and run away

  • I need this issue sorted out quick. Please who has the contact of that Desser Cyril or any NFF member that can volunteer his number. I shall begin a crusade to get him down to super eagles. This is no joke i dont want to suffer heart attack by June.

    • Hi guys, no need to fight over anything, friendlies are meant to help locate the weaknesses and map out strategies in a team.On a more serious note,I just watched that Cyriel dressers now and O boy,he is prolific indeed and very modern striker that can take on defenders and dribble too.Let those concerned give him a chance after all he is Nigerian too.Ahmed Musa is old and can’t really offer what he doesn’t have, this isn’t power or politics, let the best represent our country.

  • Edoman of New Jersey, USA. 4 years ago

Any National team in Europe could have beaten this Nigeria team tonight. We were suppose to reinforced the gain made when Poland was beaten at home. If you are happy with what you watched tonight and you think it was good enough to see this team through the group stage in Russia, then your contributions to the debate is not being helpful. If it was a real situation as one would probably have in Russia, Serbia would have thrive to score more goals, perhaps, more easily so. IMO.

  • Abdulrazak 4 years ago

The great Sper Eagles team of 1994 lost all their preparatory matches enroute to the World Cup in USA. 0-1 vs Colombia, O-2 vs Romania, 1-3 vs Sweden and 1-5 vs Holland. Yet this team is set as the standard that all our National teams are rated.
The present Super Eagles team has played three preparatory matches so far, won two and lost one and all of a sudden it’s doomsday.
Our opponents in group D, Argentina, Croatia and Iceland all got hammered and yet people of little faith, who in my opinion have little or no understanding of football have suddenly become Sunday morning experts on this forum.
Gernot Rohr, is a wily old fox and a fantastic coach. He is not showing his whole hand yet and why should he? Football nowadays is much more than tactics and technics.
For those who would like to understand what this means, please, go back in history and look up the line up Clemence Westerhorf deployed in his preparatory matches enroute USA ’94.
Then perhaps you might begin to understand Gernot Rohr.

    • My broda… God bless u. U really sabi football jare… It’s funny how people fail to understand that Rohr knows exactly what he is doing. He already knows his first 11 players. He is only trying to figure out his reserves. Make una wait make world cup come first.

  • Abdularaz. Thanks for your contributions. You make matured comments devoid of sentiment and emotion.

  • It is totally obvious that today’s team lacked coherence. The goalkepper didn’t perform badly. The 2 goals conceeded were due to poor man marking. It i obvious the team missed Mikel, Balogun, Abdullahi and Victor Moses. Thank God that GR has identified the need for more deadly strikers in the mould of Yekini, Amokachi or Drogba and has instructed his scouting agent (AGALI) to recommend some. To my fellow SE fans, we must move in tandem with the plan of NFF & GR which is that the present team is being prepared for next year’s Nation’s Cup and 2022 Mundial. Therefore we should not over expect in this World Cup. If we go by this, we should therefore drop the idea of praise today and outright condemnation tomorrow. For instance, we condemned Idowu and Abdullahi against Poland but today we are singing their praises and looked for other scapegoats to condemn. Let us know that our team is still work in progress and that players have off days.

  • Ayphillydegreat 4 years ago

Ighalo hoofed a sitter that could’ve gave us the lead. I’m ok with the performance of the defense and the midfield even in defeat. Just bring in Mikel and Balogun (we need them both fit for the WorldCup) and we can contest. All we need is a top striker that will pursue every lost cause for the team and score goals. As long as we have Victor Moses in the team SuperEagles will always create chances. We need a striker with precision and endless directness. I think Isaac Success if fit and stay focused between now and June can fit the bill if we are looking for a fast solution as we have no time. Sadiq Umar is another option if he continues with his form at Breda. Henry Onyekuru if he can make a quick comeback and quite possibly Olarenwaju Kayode. These are players that’d already been with the team or around the team. Therefore, if they’re doing well they should be called up to fight for the top strikers shirt with Ighalo to see who can fit in. As for Desser I think he’s a top talent, but he needs to be integrated into the team gradually since he has never played for us before. Efan Ekoku could not displace the likes of Amokachi, Amunike, including the great Yekini in 94 despite all his exploits in premier league at the time which was very rare to find many Africans play in the league back then. At the moment we need a striker and I think the full back position on both flanks still need to be clarified once everyone is called up to camp. Overall, this SuperEagles team is still a work in progress and hopefully come June they will make some noise. Our toughest game will be against Croatia. They will play just like Serbia, but the SuperEagles will be ready for any onslaught they bring. Iceland will be stubborn, they’ll try to be difficult to break down and by the time we meet Argentina hopefully we should already have 6 points. Infact Argentina may not even make it out of this group. It’s the WorldCup and it’s really going to be fun. Can’t wait!! I hope all our hopefuls stat fit and ready to spill their blood for the shirt. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

  • The striker who score two goals against us plays in Fulham in English 2nd division.
So why can’t we bring in Fernando Adi from Portland Timbers and Kelechi Nwakali for #9 and 10?
Why not try Iwobi in #10?
    Something just has to change.

  • Ifeanyi 4 years ago

The match was OK, that’s the essence of friendly matches to see your weaknesses. I think we only missed Mikel Obi, our problem in that match was midfield. our midfield collapsed no holding midfielder who can hold the ball and distribute. But we will get there.

  • Ara Nkita 4 years ago

@Ayphillydegreat,I remember you from those days at Kickoff.com.
So you are here? Good to see you again.

  • Victor Onyeanum 4 years ago

Very brilliant contributions. I agree with Bekee almost entirely, except with regard to his confidence in Uzoho. We now know our level. I had warned that we should not celebrate victory before a match is played and that we should not overrate our players or our team. I had also warned that we should not be carried away by the defeat of Poland and conclude that Serbia would be a walk-over. Now that we have come to our senses and know where we belong, can we stop over-hyping both our players and our team? Can we stop making those outrageous, outlandish and preposterous predictions? Can we start seeing our team as a modest one that MAY do well at the WC? Can we start seeing our team as one that will find it difficult to qualify from our group or may not qualify at all? Can we just support the team and have little or no confidence in them and take any result as we see it? Can we stop saying that Nigeria and Croatia, and not Argentina will qualify from our group?

  • omo9ja 4 years ago

Just in. I couldn’t believed what I’m seeing now. I did not watch the match but I watched l the highlights on YouTube. How did Eagles play like that? Did they tired or ego?

I think this should be the last time NFF would organized a friendly match in England if they can’t afford a standard pitch, what a shame. Same thing happened against Senegal last year. I did not see anything special in Serbian team. Even, our under 17 can not play like that. can you imagine a world cup team playing so poor like that?

These player have beginning to grow wings? Look at Iwobi head, that no 20 Azim, Ekong, Joel Obi and Moses. No wonder they were wearing red boots in our green and white green jersey. Look at Serbian team, they dress properly. Look at their boots, their hair cut. Apparans shows the manner. Serbian team really means business.

I will blame coach Rohr for this poor display. We don’t have time for this experiment no more. Just add few players to the team period.
We are been calling Rohr attention to some of our top strikers for so long but the man refused to listen to us. Ebuehi is not full feet. He shouldn’t have comes for the two friendly matches. No excuses guys. Eagles played below our expectations and we deserve to be beaten period. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • Ara Nkita 4 years ago

Great one @Victor Onyeanum,I wish CSN could include “like” buttons in the comments section so we can up-vote some comments.
Yes,our team is just and simply MODEST,that’s all.
I’m keeping my expectations at the world cup at a moderate level.
If they supercede it,good and fine but if they don’t meet it,still good and fine.
Overall,we need lethal strikers as a man making love needs oxygen.
We are very deficient in that aspect of our team.
Let Victor Agali keep sentiments apart and get us better strikers even if they are playing at Orodo village square.

  • I don’t know y some pple don’t understand d pattern of football there is no way ur top striker can function without d midfield working, as far as am concern our main problem is d creative midfield positions, CU’s some of us forget to talk abt d midfield and dat CU’s we av a lot of good defensive midfielders and some pple forget dat creative role is an entire different thing from d defensive role,so let leave ighalo and d rest of our strikers alone CU’s they are d best we,ve got for now take note how those the strikers perform whenever Mikel is around they do Better CU’s of how he controls d midfield and and give those killer pass to d strikers to do d damage,so my point is this we need a creative mildfilders not strikers.

  • At Emeka, why was it that ighalo performed a little bit better than Musa when he came in?was it not d same mid field? If I get it right, good positioning is part of what a good finisher must possess,
Iwobi performed better when he swapped to d center of the midfield. Mikel obi cannot play forever and in his absence, name a good mid fielder that u are sure can hold his place well(pls not K Nwakali). We need a good offensive midfielder truly but the likes of lewandowski, Vardy and so on can’t be in dat match for Nigeria without a shot on goal. Against Poland, ighalo was found all through in d mist of polish defence cos he believes only in strength to hold on to d ball and not d movements. I’m sure if he’s well positioned, one or two passes might come from either moses or iwobi if not from obi. Musa is out of it. For a player like slimani to b playing ahead of him then wat do u expect? So my brother, without Mikel, that’s all we have..Etebo played 90 mins against south Africa in dat role, we still lost. We need a good striker with positioning, Stenght, speed to blend with wat we have. We are tired of striker playing for 90 mins without get a single through ball cos of their bad positionings. Thanks.. Note: we have tried Iwobi, Iheanacho, Etebo, even Joel without mikel…yet same stories for ighalo. Thanks

  • Friendly matches like this are meant to expose our flaws, last year we lost 2-0 at home to south Africa. The coach used the match to try out new players, but came back to beat the african champions 4-0. That we lost to serbia today dosent mk the super Eagles a very poor team.Argentina lost 6-1, Portugal lost 3-0, with these defeats, these teams still remain good teams..we can only learn on the mistakes of last night correct them and be ready for the world cup

  • philip 4 years ago

am pleased with the way iwobi played, like his confidence and how he covers up when we loose the ball, musa is useless to this team, he is just occupaing chance that could be handed to a better person, and the formation we played aganist agentina in our 4,2 victory over them was more effective 3 5 2 formation it allowed us to play 2 holding midfeilders and a creative midfeider.since this team has more of holding midfiders that formation could be key to us when mikel is around

  • Chamberlain Duruike 4 years ago

Hello guys, please I have heard so much clamour and rating for Cyril Dressers. But I just have the following questions:

    1. If he is that good, why is he not in the Belgium team, or at least be invited for one of the Belgium friendly matches.

    2. Will he fit into Rohr’s team philosophy, if yes, is this the right time to bring him on.

    3. I hear he might not be open to playing for Nigeria…he is still expecting a Belgium call.

  • Guys please, you can not always win. The Serbs were too serious as if there their lives depended on it. After all there was nothing at stake.

  • Abdulrazak 4 years ago

Mexico tried out their reserves in the friendly match played this morning against Croatia. The Croats were awarded a penalty in the 62nd minute which was converted by Rakitic. Perhaps in desperation or fear of being criticised in the media, the Mexican coach threw on his two central defenders that had been on the bench in order to perhaps salvage something from the match.
One of them coped a nasty injury, was stretchered to the hospital and is in danger of missing out on the World Cup.
Lesson:Pre world cup friendlies are not do or die affairs. It should serve to correct whatever deficiencies that are in the team.

  • Cherechi 4 years ago

H Man God bless you. That’s the problem we have in Nigeria, we always like to win,Argentina was beating by 6.1 yet hell has not been let loosed and these guys we are Criticizing are the same guys that eliminated Cameroon,Algeria and Zambia in the qualifying race but we are nailing them as if they did not try. Even if Messi is a Nigerian we still complain, yes, the guys did not do very well but they are trying and believe me this world cup will be full of surprises and this is the second game the guys are losing since GR started coaching the Super Eagles. Let’s criticise the guys constructively and at the same time encourage appreciate them. My Opinion. I stand to be corrected. God bless Nigeria.

    • @Cherechi
Many people forget that these are practice games, aimed at assessing a team’s preparedness and ability to deliver the goods at the main event. Professionals carry out ‘deliberate practice’ all the time, gauging their strengths and skills, fine tuning their approach. I think Rohr is a consummate professional who is guarding his winning cards. Let’s support the team. It’s not yet time for THE REAL THING. They’ll get better. I was particularly impressed with the composure and performance of Uzoho, a 19-year old who is carrying the emotions of 180M people on his sturdy shoulders.

  • Abdul thanks for your understanding

  • Abdulrazak 4 years ago

Enroute to USA’94 Clemence Westerhorf fielded such players like Ajibade Babalade, Wole Odegbami, et al, in the preparatory matches and left out most of his core players. The Super Eagles were ranked 5th best team in the world then. The highest ranked African team ever and there was massive expectations. The core of the team only showed up in the first match against Bulgaria and the world sat up and took notice.
Has anyone noticed how Gernot Rohr has deliberately left out Moses Simon, who hereto has been the starting choice ahead of Alex Iwobi?
The world will take notice of the Super Eagles come June. There’s something special about this team. I can feel it.

  • Ayodele Stephen 4 years ago

@honesty UR comment was spiot on.serb before the game as lost 3out of 5 friendly games winning China and Georgia for the two games. And luking at the stadium standard ,this is my submission:
    1. That Serbs were ready to die on the field to safe there dwindling image before their fans so they were ruthless and there course was assisted due to the small size of the stadium..
2: our boys play safe as I can deduce from there lethargic display .the pitch is substandard, small and don’t meet up with fifa standard.and any reasonable footballer will play safe ..
    3. Nonetheless Musa ,awezim, onazi shld be throw out of the team while players lik babatunde who plays at 2014 wc and was a revelation shld b invited, let us see him again.. , also Adi of timbers in usa and also for the sake of his father land let us mend fences with Enyeama who also conceded 4goals in that same god forsaken small and substandard stadium to come and give pep talk to the keepers of the team bcos for him to have bn a veteran of 3wc is not a joke at all. All the goalkeeper trainers are just test book trainers but if experience of the lik of Enyeama shld talk to them(the present keepers) then one can be rest assured that practical teaching experience will be impacted and am sure this will make uzoho better equipped for the wc as to me uzoho as the good qualities tall, huge and alert and humble unlik our ezenwa who at this level talk too much to the press only wonder wat he want to impress.
    4. If SA had lost against Nigeria ,they Wuld have qualif for the WC and if nigeria had beating SA in Uyo then we Wuld have not qualified for the Mundia meaning for every lost game there is a salient but golden lesson to be learnt wch most times helps the team to perform creditably well in a competition situation. So nigeria I see no cause for worry here. Mark my name and words wen the dividend of this start pouring in good result in the wc proper.
