Serena Williams eased to a straight-sets victory over sister Venus to book her place in the fourth round of the US Open on Friday. The Williams sisters were meeting for the 30th time in their careers, but it was one of the more one-sided encounters as Serena strolled to a 6-1 6-2 victory in just 71 minutes in New York.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion, Serena, who is looking to equal Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 major titles, even survived an injury time-out during the first set and she admitted afterwards it was her best performance since returning to the WTA Tour following the birth of her daughter last year.
“This was my best match since I have returned,” Serena said.
Venus was also magnanimous in defeat and she feels her sibling will take some stopping if she can maintain that form throughout the tournament.
“I don’t think I did a lot wrong. But she just did everything right,” Venus told a news conference. “Obviously, that level is definitely where she’s going to want to stay during this whole tournament.”
Serena’s reward for reaching round four will be a clash with Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, who beat world number one Simona Halep in the first round and has yet to drop a set at the tournament.
Kanepi beat Swede Rebecca Peterson 6-3 7-6 to reach the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the second successive year.11 BUSINESS NUGGETS FROM SUPER EAGLES BRONZE MEDAL TRIUMPH. The content of this ebook will propel you above your competition. DOWNLOAD NOW!!!
