Serero: I’m Ready To Play Any Role For Bafana Against Eagles

Serero: I’m Ready To Play Any Role For Bafana Against Eagles

Bafana Bafana of South Africa forward, Thulani Serero, says he is willing to play anywhere that head coach Stuart Baxter wants him to play against the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations clash will take place at the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg.

Serero this week had his first full training session with Bafana after a year-long absence, with the Vitesse Arnhem man facing the wrath of the South African Football Association over comments made about his place in the squad last year.

Now though that all seems to have been put behind the people involved as ‘Cream’ looks to push his way into Baxter’s starting eleven for the clash with the Super Eagles, and he says that he’s pleased to be back in contention.

“It feels good being back in the country and seeing the guys, everybody in the squad. It’s been a nice welcome, I haven’t seen the guys in a while and it’s been nice catching up,” Serero told the media.

“I’m South African, and I love playing for my country. It’s nothing more than that, I don’t have to say anything else.”

5 Bafana Stars To Watch Out For Vs Eagles

Serero also spoke the about the conversation between him and Baxter before his call-up.

“There was a normal simple conversation and we understood each other. It was simple, and I’m here – that’s the most important thing. You can ask him what he said to me, but the most important thing is that I’m here and happy to be part of the team,”he stated.

“We shouldn’t make this about me, the most important thing is to win on Saturday. It’s not about me. We need to get the three points and qualify for the African Cup.”

The 28-year-old has played more as a defensive midfielder at Dutch club, Vitesse Arnhem and is willing to play anywhere for the team.

“It’s a different position, and I like to go more forward, but the way we play, we play from the back and the coach wants me to get the ball from there and make the team play. Sometimes I do go forward, but it’s about what the coach wants,” he added.

I hope Rohr doesn’t play Akpeyi because the South Africans are already celebrating the news that he will be in post because they know how to score him. We don’t need Akpeyi to know them or not after all the matches Ezenwa keeped and we won he didn’t know the team and their league players one advice Rohr should stop that talk of Akpeyi knows the South Africa league very well because he has 4 clean sheet and conceded 11 goals as well. A bad keeper can never change that is my last advice about the goalkeeping selection!

    • Chima, I respectfully disagree with you about Akpeyi.
Akpeyi has proven time and again, much to his own detriment, that he doesn’t have what it takes to make the number one position in the Super Eagles his.
That being the case, I don’t think he is a poor ‘back-up’ goal keeper in times like this.
Trust me brother Chima, should Akpeyi get the nod on Saturday, he is capable of doing a decent job.
What Akpeyi needs is encouragement. With your encouragement, mine and that of well-meaning fans, Akpeyi should be able to do a decent job whenever he is called upon as a backup.
His shortcomings are very well documented however, he stills plays his football at a high level and works hard as a dedicated professional.
Let’s rally round Akpeyi and give him our support, he is after all one of us.
One day, will get an Enyeama, Rufai or Shoronmu (all of whom had their own flaws). But for now, let’s make do with what we have.

      • Exactly my sentiments, deo. Even though like the average SE fan, I’m skeptical about Akpeyi, I have the feeling Rohr will give him another chance on Saturday to prove himself. He just might come good this time. I watched him captain Chippa United against top PSL club Kaizer Chiefs (incidentally captained by Bafana keeper Khune) last week. The match ended goaless and Akpeyi made a few crucial saves.

And not forget the howler against Nabil bentaleb no SE goalkeeper has ever conceded that kind of Goal honestly our goalkeeper coach at the moment is the worst for a long time! If Uzoho wasn’t injured they will never had invited Theo and that is why they are not sure of the goal tender for Saturday this tells that they never knew they have been camping dramatic Akpeyi or Rusty and my ex favorite Ezenwa

If Akpeyi was that bad, He wouldn’t have remained the first choice goal keeper for Chippa United over the years. We need to be reminded that he was ‘discovered’ by the club when he represented Nigeria in a CHAN tournament hosted by South Africa an since then he has been their first choice in goal.
Despite the above, I am of the opinion he shouldn’t be in goal on Saturday. He seems to be jittery and unsure of himself whenever he is in goal for us. Maybe the criticism is getting to him.
Let him be in goal against Uganda to restore his confidence. But for this game, I vote Afekholai.

Chippa United has never won a major trophy since the induction of Akpeyi. Chippa no be club that his why he even captains them sometimes

@Chima and Bomboy, me i agree with una o! NO AKPEYI! NO AKPEYI!

  • Austin 4 years ago

Please I suggest we drop akpeyi and use afekholie. Ezenwa has no playing time in enyimba and akpeyi is allergic to the super eagles as he is always scared and jittery. The new enyimba goalkeeper is match fit and ready to give his all.

Akpeyi does not have any business in the team after his consistency in making grave blunders. Peter Rufai can do better even in retirement.

  • Realistically, Afelokai should be mandated to guard our posts. He is match ready. Ezenwa is rusty at the moment and Akpeyi is bereft of confidence. He is not a bad keeper, but maybe it is not his fate to keep for the SE. Let’s not force things, but go with the natural flow.

  • Watching the highlights of that unfortunate home loss to SA in Uyo again, it feels so painful. Akpeyo should have done better on that one-on-one situation with Percy Tau, even pulled him down and get a red card for a new goalkeeper to go in while a player is substituted. But Akpeyi was not the only culprit. Besides the fact the team was young and Rohr kind of underestimated SA, Onazi was so overweight that day and couldn’t pull himself really for all the necessary tackles, Awaziem and Echiejile were so below par, and Kelechi was blunt upfront on the day. The midfielders and defenders had to go forward to try to help out in getting a goal back when it was still 1-0 when Khune found a loophole, threw the ball far afield for a counter which they utilized.

If you noticed, after that match, Rohr lost confidence in players like Akpeyi, Onazi, Kelechi, Awaziem and Echiejile and relegated them to the bench and began scouting for replacements.
