Sheyi Ojo Eager To Dump England For Nigeria

England Under-20 World Cup winner Sheyi Ojo says he would consider playing for Nigeria at senior international level if offered the opportunity by the West African country.

The 21-year-old, who is on loan at French club Reims from Liverpool, is eligible to play for the Super Eagles because his parents are Nigerians.

Under FIFA rules Ojo can switch allegiances because he is yet to play for the English sejor team .

And, despite having bagged 43 England caps from under-16 to under-21 level, Ojo is keen to fly with the Eagles.

“To be honest, I don’t know much about it (Nigeria interest), but if they call me I’d be honoured to go to Nigeria,” Ojo told BBC Sport.

“It’s obviously a massive nation. I’m just really focused on club football at the moment, but I’m excited for the future, both club and country.

“My parents are originally from Nigeria as well, so they know a lot about it. They’ve always been keen on the idea [to represent Nigeria] but so far I’ve mainly been focusing on club football.

“It’s starting to get to the time where I have to start thinking about my future. And of course, if Nigeria were to call me now it would be an honour.”

Ojo played five matches including the 1-0 win over Venezuela in the 2017 Fifa U-20 World Cup final to help England to their biggest international title since 1966.

Nigeria have previously succeeded in snapping up former England youth internationals like Sone Aluko, Victor Moses, Shola Ameobi, Alex Iwobi and Ola Aina for the Super Eagles.

The three-time African champions are also close to persuading Everton striker Ademola Lookman to play for them rather than England.

Ojo, who joined Liverpool from MK Dons as a youth prospect in 2011, would love to join such an illustrious list.

“Of course, if I was to get selected I’d definitely think about it, I’d never turn down Nigeria,” said Ojo.

“I’m from Nigeria originally so it’d be an honour, likewise with England as well. If I keep doing well, opportunities will come by for club and country.

“It’s not really something I’m thinking about at the moment but you never know what could happen in the future.”

  • What are we waiting for? Please let’s do the needful. We need as much quality as possible. Welcome development.Pinnick’s vision and drive coming through

    • Im not sure the fools in the NFA are interested in that at the moment rather they are too busy enriching thier fat pockets.

      • Purified 3 years ago

Well, we are no longer in the era of NFA it is now NFF. The guys there now are doing very well. They have the interest of Nigeria at heart.

  • What wing is this guy playing. We need any good player in all wings of course but they should be dedicated and willing. Ojo is one player that has helped England reach this height in youth football and if he should bring his experience to the Super Eagles it will be nice. We all welcome this young man.

    • He plays on the right wing, can also play left.
In order to get into the squad he’ll have to play better than Sam Kalu and if we also get Bonaventure Dennis and Arnaud Danjuma he’ll have to get past them too to get into the team. Those two have shared the right wing for the Belgian champions Club Brugge.
Then add Kingsley Sokari of Sfaxia inTunisia and finally Orji Okonkwo (Under 17 2015 Golden Eaglets) who plays for Bologna in Italy.

On the left wing, he’ll have to be able to bench Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi (his most effective position for Arsenal) as well as Henry Onyekuru.

If the coach chooses the best players available to us and plays them in their best position it’ll be hard for Sheyi to get into the team, however he’ll be a good person to have to keep competition for places

Kindly stop beating around the Bush cuz we all know you are talking about Victor Moses and Call a Spade a spade. The way Moses left the National team is wrong considering the fact that this is the time we need him the most but the pride inside of him is gallantly playing parts here. And bet me, if he hadn’t retired prematurely @the National team, what his experiencing at Chelsea now wouldn’t have been. Shey he said he quitted the National team to focus on club career, so how far with his club career since then? Here in the North we say #Sensi Yakare I.e No application of Common sense

    • You day mad thunder fire you who be yeye ppl usless guy Moses don still give you money idiot

One can feel the passion this Young man has for Nigeria reading those lines of his statements over and over again. Another clear picture of the good work the Amaju-pinnick led board has done in the last 4 years. They’ve created the passion and longing to Play for the country in oversea-based Nigerian players. Imagine this guy describing Nigeria as a “Massive Nation”. All thanks to a good football federation we have that has painted Nigeria well in the eyes of the watching world. Sheyi Ojo is welcomed as for me considering the fact that it will make the Super Eagles shirt to be more competitive and not reserved for a particular player. Sheyi Ojo is a winger and one would agree with me that the Wing role is where we have a lot of Talents so if you want to be part of the National team as a winger, you have to be on Fire. Like am sure Onyekuru will nearly be weeping now cuz almost all his contenders in that position are scoring goals and putting up impressive display for their clubs but as of now he has hit top gear for his club. Ahmed Musa(hat-trick), Samuel Kalu(Impressive display), Iwobi(assist and Great display) Moses Simon(scored for Levante). The Super Eagles is beginning to look like what we all want it to be. Not forgetting Arnaut Danjuma. He’s the Bomb for Club Brugge presently and Nigeria must get him I watched him play against Gent on Sunday and was impressed by his game. At a point the commentator said “Every single touch of Danjuma seems to be a threat to the Gent defence”. He was just fantastic and will be a great addition to the National team considering the fact that he operates as a Center Forward as well and he score goals.
