Former Super Eagles chief coach, Samson Siasia has predicted that teams from Europe stand a better chance of winning the World Cup than Argentina and host Brazil.
According to the former Super Eagles striker, the World Cup will elude Argentina because they rely too much on Messi to get results, noting that the team is bereft of ideas any time Messi is not playing well or crowded by opposition.
He said that countries like Holland, Germany, Costa Rica and Brazil are playing better football than Argentina and are favourites to win the World Cup in Brazil.
“I don’t see the Argentines winning the World Cup because they are not playing well and they have reached the last eight because they have a Messi who has been unstoppable so far in this championship
“It is unfortunate that Chile had to go out after playing so well but, in their absence, I get this strong feeling that Holland or Germany or Brazil will win the World Cup but I can bet Argentina will not win” he stated
He said he would not be surprised if Belgium show Argentina the exit when they clash today in the quarter finals of the World Cup, adding that Holland have been very impressive and if they fail to win the Mundial, it might be Brazil.
He lamented the performance of African teams in Brazil but took positives from the way Algeria and Nigeria held their own against very good teams, adding they gave hope of great things to come.
He continued: “I think African teams can reach the semi final of the World Cup in 2018 but that depends on how fast they are able to correct the mistakes of the Brazil World Cup”
Siasia commended the Super Eagles for making it to the second round where they lost to France, stressing that the Nigerians did well against France, Argentina, Iran and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
