Siasia, Eguavoen Thumb Up Eagles

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Former Super Eagles stars; Samson Siasia and Austin Eguavoen who have also both coached the Nigerian national team at different times have commended the performance of the team in Wednesday’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan’s Falcons of Jediane.

The Eagles defeated Sudan 3-1 in the return leg of their fixtures after suffering the ignominy of a 1-0 loss against the Eastern Africans four days earlier.

The victory ensures that Nigeria are still in the race for a place in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations where they hope to defend the crown they won in 2013, with four points in Group A behind South Africa and Congo respectively.

Siasia said: “The Eagles deserve the victory over Sudan. The win will calm the nerves of Nigerians though there are more adjustments to be made in the team.

“We hope they will get the wins in the next games.

Eguavoen on his part stated:” When the ball got to Emenike, the transition from the back was not good enough, it was always slow.

There should have been more support for Emenike. I expected Oshaniwa to get forward, though Onazi improved on this in the second half from the right back.

Eguavoen further lavished praises on the inspirational Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi who had a great impact in the outcome of the game.

“Mikel showed leadership in the team. He always went forward which is what we all want to see from him as a Chelsea player that he is.

“There is a big expectation from him and he delivered today(Wednesday). Well done to him,” ‘Cerezo’ concluded.

The Eagles’ next round of games comes up on the 15th and 19th of November against Congo and South Africa respectively.
