Coach of Nigeria Under-23s Samson Siasia insists that winning the gold medal at the All Africa Games in Congo is not negotiable for his team.
Speaking before the Nigerian contingent to the AAG departed Abuja for Brazaville aboard a chartered flight on Monday, Siasia rued the unavalability of some key players whose contribution helped the team qualify, but assured that they still have what it takes to win the gold.
“I will particularly miss Godwin Saviour whose new side held himback and others who could not make the team due to clubs’ refusal to release them. I am sad that I don’t have the full complement of my players for the AAG but we’ll do our best,” Siasia told completesportsnigeria.com.
“What we agreed with the players who signed for new clubs abroad was that they should include their being released for the AAG in their contract, but I am shocked that they did the contrary and here we are.
“Our target remains to win the gold in Congo because that will give the confidence boost to face the Olympic qualifying championship in Senegal later in the year. Winning the gold in Congo is not negotiable.”
On his team’s striking problem, Siasia stated that they have been working on that in their last few games, adding that they will try and perfect that in Congo, noting that the team will score plenty of goals when the AAG gets underway.
