Simpson Hails Cup Progress

Defender Danny Simpson feels Leicester’s progression in the Carabao Cup is good for everyone connected with the club. The Foxes booked a quarter-final cash with Manchester City after a 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Southampton at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday.

The game ended goalless before the hosts emerged victorious from 12 yards out as Danny Ward pulled off a crucial save to deny Manolo Gabbiadini.

It has been a turbulent few weeks for the East Midlanders following the death of owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in a helicopter crash and the result means a high-profile encounter with Pep Guardiola’s men in the next round.

Many clubs play down the EFL Cup and field a virtual second-string side but Simpson, who played the full 90 minutes, does not see it that way.

“It’s a good competition for us, especially for the squad players and obviously we were at home to get through it,” he told LCFC TV. “It’s good for everyone, the squad and everyone involved. It’s good to keep that feeling and everyone is buzzing in the dressing room.”

Both sides scored their first five penalties until Ward’s intervention saw Leicester through and Simpson confessed that he always thought the keeper would do the business. “We’re always confident with him in goal and all the lads wanted to take one, especially at home, so it’s good we got through,” added the former Newcastle man.
