Simpson Holds Half-Way Lead

Webb Simpson landed a 71-foot eagle putt on the last to open up a one-shot lead after 36 holes of the Dell Technologies Championship. The American, who will represent his country at the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National in France, made six birdies over his opening 17 holes on Saturday before making a monster eagle putt on the par-five 18th.

Simpson, 33, signed for a superb eight-under-par 63 to move onto -11 for the tournament, opening up a one-shot lead from English duo Justin Rose and Tyrrell Hatton, who also went round in 63 at TPC Boston.

Tommy Fleetwood is in sole possession of fourth on -8, three shots off the pace, while Australian Cameron Smith and Mexican Abraham Ancer are a further stroke back on -7.

Simpson, who is chasing his sixth PGA Tour title and second win of the season, has revealed he is hoping to become a regular at the top of the world rankings after returning to his best form.

“I’ve got back in the top-20 in the world (currently 17th) and I want to stay here,” he was quoted as saying by the PGA Tour’s official website. “I don’t want to just have a couple of good years and have it go away for two years.

“There are a few guys that are always top-10 in the world. I want to do that. I want to stay consistently good as a golfer.”
