  • Mr Alao Mumini, I love your suggestion!!! Adopt the Mourinho style!!! When you know the opponent is stronger or better than you, block the goalmouth with a luxurious bus parked permanently there until the end of the match. Of course expect a barrage of attack. You also resolutely defending. You will become so exhausted at the end of the match that the next match will be another thing. This probably was why the Serbia match was so difficult for us. Victor Moses was too tired. Troost too. Ndidi and Joel Obi too. Even when Ighalo came, it was the same problem. Agreed Mikel, Leon Balogun were not there, but the main reason for the Serbia match loss was tiredness. Parking the bus has its own disadvantages too.

Let us start looking more at team cohesion than at the performance of individual players. After all, soccer is a team sport, and the best teams are those that can forge a productive chemistry. Like you, I watched the Super Eagles friendlies, but also the friendlies of Brazil. I see a vast difference in soccer culture. Individually the Brazilians are not much better, but they make sure energy is conserved, and they are at the right place, at the right time. Our boys are still playing panic football of the Police Grounds in the 1950s, and kicking the ball away into the sky at any opportunity. The coaches have a lot of tactical work to do, otherwise we will dissipate energy still looking for new players until the World Cup starts. I think Gernot Rohr may just be deficient in a strategic sense. He is not a top quality coach, but we are blinded by his successes against Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia. Now we are going to play teams with a culture of tactical and strategic discipline in Russia. The NFF must remind Rohr that his job description will change – no individual magic, more collective cohesion!

    • ako amadi leave rohr alone ok

      • ako amadi 3 years ago

We love hero worship, which carries us into euphoria until disaster strikes. Rohr is an average manager, and like most humans has his faults. The sooner we start looking at the team performance the better. The performance of footballers on the pitch is largely a function of the coach’s strategy. I don’t care who Gernot Rohr is, and have nothing personal against him. But if he was a fantastic coach he would not have been managing Burkina Faso and Niger. I wish him well, but see the disastrous hand-writing on the wall. We’ll all be wiser after June. Hopefully I’ll eat my words then.

        • The truth of the matter @Ako Amadi is that Nigeria is not and has never been world cup contenders.

What we are – and have always been – are an exciting team with the ability to reach the quarter finals stage and perhaps semis.

Coach Rohr, despite his lack of pedigree has shown thus far that he can lead Nigeria to the knock out stages.

After the victories against Zambia, Algeria and Cameroon, he has gone on to overcome Argentina and Poland with solid albeit not overly impressive displays.

All that in mind, coach Rohr has done enough to suggest that the Nigeria team that we will be one that will be difficult to break down and one that can cause the odd upsets.

I don’t know the coach and I am not overly enthusiastic about our chances.

That said, he has done well thus far and one can only give him a chance.

iwobi should be given free role in the midfield anytime Mikel is not around.
he can hold on to the ball very well and he has good passing abilities.
the only striker Nigeria needs to join the attacking force is cyriel dessers.
he has good conversion rate unlike ighalo.

  • Well..I believe Ebuehi and Joel Obi will perform better in a competitive match…even shehu performed woefully against South Africa. Whatever makes ighalo to be part of this current team should make Martins to be part of this team too. We suppose to be going forward truly but even if it will be his last world cup, he should just play. I wasn’t in support of this in d past but he is rated above ighalo in Chinese league. Let truth be told…without Mikel, we have tried Etebo,Joel, Iheanacho, Iwobi behind ighalo and those are all we can provide at this moment. We need a striker that can manage these midfielders by searching around opponents defence for spaces not the striker that will believe only in strength. May be he can only play with Mikel. Dessers is there too.

  • People and their assertion. why the attack on Gernot Rohr @ ako madi

    • ako amadi 3 years ago

People and their blindness! Read with your eyes open and you’ll see I have not “attacked” Gernot Rohr in the dirty language you use. I am critical, and he’s not an immortal without flaws @ Mr Tayo

      • No @Ako amadi, you did not attack the coach in any way shape or form however it is fair to say that you are not particularly over the moon by him and what he is doing.

In a way, I am not overly enthusiastic about our chances either however, whichever way you want to look at it, the coach has done well this far and in the totality of the analysis, there is nothing yet to suggest the bleak picture that your contributions above appear to suggest.

I hope I am proved right.

In my own assessment we need at least two of these strikers in the team going to the world cup. Dessers, Fernando Adi, Onuanchu, and Obafemi Martins. These players especially Dessers and Adi smell goals. They can single handedly tear any defence apart. The excuse of not calling them to the team saying its too late is not tenable. In 1982 world cup, when Italy was looking for a deadly goal scorer, Poalo Rossi was brought from prison to join with the Italian team for the world cup. He was not part of the Italian team preparations for the world cup. And behold Rossi was the top scorer at that world cup. He wrecked the then brazilian team with their array of stars. It is not that Ighalo as our top 9 or Ahmed Musa are bad but they are not consistent in scoring goals. So we need these guys. They should be invited. Pls Gernot Rohr and NFF take note.

  • I Think Desser has been contacted since 2017 but and he expressed interest too. The just need to call him up. Watch him on youtube and you will agree that he has the solution to our goal scoring problems. The fact is that ighalo rely on bute power play while Iheanacho has the poorest positioning sense ever for a striker. Desser drags defender out of position attacks spaces and takes risks. We just need him now. It is not too late. It wasnt too late for chidi Nwanu, Mike Emenalo and Ekoku Efan to join the Eagles after not playing a part in the qualification.

Another striker is Adi he is built and dominant in the air standing at 6ft 4. Even Sadiq Umar might be more valuable than Iheanacho as far as striking role is concern. Iheanacho strive on on counter attack move or one on one with keeper thats it. He cannot manufacture goals. Let us not talk about Musa whomi believe going to world cup would not be based on sporting reasons otherwise we will apologize to active Nigerian strikers like sadiq and co.

I rate Desser high and Adi too both can help us alot. Again steven Eze is far better than Awaziem and Omerue even Balogun is only better in terms of technique be that Eze is a competitor. He is dominant in air and very detailed in marking and does nkt commit unnecessary fouls. It took me o ly our first match in chan 18 to rate him and inly the first match for Bulgaria club to sign him and take him straight to their first team.

It is absolutely imperative that we keep our expectations modest. In reality SuperEagles will struggle to come out of that group. We have the youngest team going to the Mundial and perhaps this will be our first major tournament under Rohr. Most of our players with the exception of Mikel, Moses, Musa, Onazi, Echiejile and Omeruo. Most of our boys will be going to the WorldCup for the first time. Therefore, our expectations should be minimal. That said Rohr has done a great job on these team thus far. However, he’s not a world-class coach by any stretch of imagination. I do think he’s a decent coach who knows his onions and far better than any indigenous coach we ever had. That said; I believe we have enough talents to make some noise in Russia. We should know that Rohr has never had extended camping with the SuperEagles since he took over from Mr run away Oliseh. I think the 3 weeks camping before the WorldCup will help in team bonding and understanding among our boys. SuperEagles will definitely be a tough nut to crack at the Mundial I just think we only need that intimidating presence in attack.

    • I disagree with some of your points although by and large, i am the same page with most of your points.

Firstly, it is highly disrespectful to say Rohr is better than any indigenous coach we ever had.

The late coach Keshi qualified us for the world cup where we reached the knock out phase for the first time in 18 years, took us to the confederation cup, won the Afcon and won bronze in Chan.

Late coach Amodu won a number of continental cups (akin to Europa League Cup in Europe), qualified us for the 2010 FIFA world cup without losing a single match and also took us to 3rd place in the Afcon.

Coach Rohr is good; but please, not better than all the indegenous coaches we ever had !

I like coach Rohr, but let’s all hope the defeats to South Africa and Serbia are a sign of things to come!

      • Ayphillydegreat 3 years ago

@deo. My brother here we are again. LMAO! Well I understand your point. Rohr hasn’t won anything yet. Maybe Keshi and Amodu are in the same level as Adegboye Onigbnde. I don’t think they’re both or all better than Rohr in terms of tactics and technical know-how Rohr is way better than them in terms of selecting and assembling our most inform players. No sentiments in selections and no sharing of bonuses between players and coaches which has always been the bane of most indigenous coaches. For me I believe we have an exciting team going to Russia. Obviously, they have to play the game of their lives against Croatia and Iceland to have any chance of progressing. However, with him having about three weeks camping with these team, anything is possible. At least now we know most of our first eleven if the WorldCup starts today. That has never been the case with our indigenous coaches. I have nothing against indigenous coaches, but in all fairness our greatest achievements in football have mostly come from foreign coaches and I believe Rohr will not be an exception. He just needs one or two qualities in the team.

  • Bestsports. 3 years ago

Coach Rohr should be told to invite kingsley sokari who plays in Tunisia. He is deadly and creative midfield player not like all our present combative midfielders. Based on fitness these players below are deserving invitation with intents to solve problematic positions. Ejide, Sadiq umar, obagoal martins, ideye, Cyriel desser, Ajayi and sokari Kingsley. Remember Efe Ambrose because our defence to be compacted and a no nonsense type of approach

  • Abdul andah 3 years ago

Nigeria needs cyriel dessers in our attacking formation.
Nigeria also needs Samuel kalu of kaa gent ,that guy is far getter than Musa in wing play with good crossing abilities, free kicks and assist on goal.
Musa should be dropped because he has never improved after Nigeria won the nations cup in 2013.
his football sense keep deteriorating anytime I watch him play.
awaziem is very good but needs to be schooled.
iwobi is better when he plays from ten in the midfield.
    kelechi is a valuable addition.
all our players need do is to working harder because I most of theses Nigerian home grown footballers by the time they start earning then they forget their mission in football and start living on past glory e.g: Kenneth omeruo, ogenyi onazi,Ahmed Musa, kelechi iheanacho……

  • Gbenga 3 years ago

If you watched the match, you will know why Rohr insists on Akpeyi!
