Seattle Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid has allayed fears that former Super Eagles forward,Obafemi Martins may be nursing a serious injury.
Martins was missing in action at the weeknd in Sounders’ 3-2 loss to Sporting Kansas.
“Oba had taken a little bit of a knock in the last game. Had it been a regular season game he could have played tonight. But as you saw, there’s a number of fouls that get committed when Kansas City plays, little kicks, and we thought there was no reason to put him out there and have him get kicked on that same spot, because he had a little bit of a dead leg there. But he’ll be ready to play against next week. So I think we’re OK,”Schmid told the Tacoma News-Tribune.
The coach had earlier talked up the ability of strike partners Martins and Clint Dempsey following their 6-0 preseason win over FC Tucson last Wednesday.
Dempsey bagged himself two goals in an emphatic performance, and although fellow forward Martins wasn’t on the scoresheet, he did play a hand in the first two goals, which has pleased Schmid.
“Some of the combinations, the goal where they combined on the 2nd goal, as a coach you just sit there and what do you say?” Schmid said while talking to the Seattle Sounders YouTube channel.
“I can’t teach that, we can’t diagram that and show them that. That’s just their instincts. And their ability to play off of each other is just so sublime.”
