Charlie Austin made his Southampton debut on Saturday evening at the Old Trafford and scored the winning goal in the 87th minute with a header from a corner as Ronald Koeman’s team defeated Manchester United 1-0.
It was Southampton’s second straight league victory at Old Trafford.
The first half was a cagey affair with both sides having few chances at goal though the better of those chances went the way of United but their poor finishing cost them.
Southampton’s best effort in the first period fell to Saido Mane courtesy of a Dusan Tadic pass but after a good control of the ball at the edge of the United vital area, the Senegalese’s attempted left footed shot was miscued.
Dutch midfielder Jodie Classie had a good game and his midfield battles with Maroune Fellaini were some of the highlights of the game.
A Juan Mata diagonal run and Wayne Rooney’s trickery found Anthony Martial in the 54th minute but the ball was ‘stolen’ from the feet of the Frenchman as he was ready to strike.
Oriol Romeu almost made it 2-0 in the death but his side-footed shot was saved by David De Gea.
Manchester United fans made their displeasure known as they booed the embattled Van Gaal.
