Southampton look set to lose the race to sign promising Charlton midfielder Joe Aribo. The club had been monitoring the 20-year-old for some time, with the academy graduate turning in some outstanding performances for Lee Bowyer’s side this campaign.

Aribo looks set to depart the club in January and is reportedly seeking a move to Germany to emulate other young English players in recent seasons, most notably Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson.
Frankfurt are interested in signing the midfielder as well as Benfica from the Portuguese top flight.
Charlton have offered a new contract to the midfielder but he is said to have turned it down amid issues behind the scenes with owner Roland Duchatelet.
Southampton will still look to pursue the young midfielder, as new boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has one eye on January, but he may be forced to concede defeat.
