Southgate: England’s Plans Worked In Deserved Win Vs Tunisia

By James Agberebi:

England coach Gareth Southgate haa said his team were deserving of their hard-fought 2-1 win against Tunisia in Group G of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup on Monday.

Tunisia were on the verge of securing a famous draw against England before Harry Kane scored the winning goal in the 91st minute to give his side a winning start.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker had put England 1-0 up on 11 minutes before Ferjani Sassi equalised for Tunisia in the 35th minute from the penalty spot.

“I think the togetherness showed tonight,” Southgate said in his post-match press conference.

“We had leaders on the field who kept delivering the right messages. We talked this morning in fact about it, we’ve covered being behind in games and being in front in games. One of the things I wanted to emphasise this morning was: 1-1, 15 minutes to go, we keep probing and we keep going for the win but we don’t expose ourselves to counter-attack in transition.

“Our outside centre-backs kept pushing forwards and stepping in, creating an overload in wide areas. The pressure built and built and that’s what you have to keep doing. We kept doing the right things and making good decisions and I thought we were good value for the win over 90 minutes.”

A win for England against Panama in their next game on Sunday will see them qualify for the round of 16.

Can u see a coach with strategy…? Ask our own coach what was his strategy going into the croatia game….and i bet he had none, because our team surely played like a team without a strategy.

  • What is with African teams and out inability to defend set-pieces effectively?

Of course your plans worked Mr Southgate. You practiced it against Nigeria and put it to good effect against Tunisia.

For Nigeria,we are still yet to find an antidote against set-pieces.

Troost-Ekong thought the best way is to prevent the attacker from jumping but he forgot that this strategy may lead to a penalty award against his team!

hahaha…..He decided to be a seat belt in order to pin him firmly to the ground. Lmao. Only God knows what was going on in Ekong’s brain we he pulled that stunt he pulled on d field of play.

      • Ekong deserve proper flogging, imagine a professional footballer acting like a principal cup defender, when will Africa team attacking instead of endless defending.
