Spal coach Leonardo Semplici felt tiredness was a reason why his side couldn’t repeat their Monday heroics against Fiorentina. The Ferrara side beat Atalanta 2-0 at home at the start of last week but found Fiorentina too strong on Saturday as La Viola ran out easy 3-0 winners.
“We found a healthy team and different to us,” said Semplici, who was forced to substitute key defender Francesco Vicari.
“Furthermore, we have made mistakes that we had never done before – the positive thing is to have them all committed in the same game, at least I hope so.
“We struggled as soon as we were 1-0 down, but this is normal in a stadium like this and against a team that really plays good football.”
Spal, who finished 17th to avoid relegation from Serie A by just three points last season, remain in sixth position with nine points from five games.
“For us it was an important test and we say we have been stalled,” added Semplici.
“We must take advantage of this defeat, continue our path of growth and understand that the episodes affect the progress of the league, but we must not suffer them. I do not want this defeat to drain our confidence.”
