Stanford Tastes Major Victory

American Angela Stanford has triumphed for the first time in a major after a dramatic final day in at the Evian Championship. She was the clubhouse leader after shooting a three-under par 68 in the final round of the tournament, with fellow American Amy Olson a shot clear going into the final hole – a par four.

However, Olson faltered, missing a six foot putt for bogey which would have taken the tournament to a play-off.

And 40-year-old Stanford admits she rode her luck but is delighted to taste victory.

“I did a bunch of stupid stuff, but deep down I’m a fighter, I’m a grinder, and I’ve always been that,” she said.

“I’m grateful. And so happy for everybody at home, everybody that’s cheered for me and never gave up on me.”

Olson, on the other hand, is rueing her missed putt but says she can take positives from the week.

“I was aggressive with my putt – a little too aggressive, obviously,” said Olson, whose previous best finish in an LPGA event was tied seventh in 2014.

“It’s disappointing to finish like that, but I had a great week. I have so many positive things to take away from it.”
