Stenson Withdraws From Northern Trust

Henrik Stenson has pulled out of The Northern Trust this week due to an ongoing elbow injury. The first FedEx Cup event gets underway at Ridgewood Country Club on Thursday but world number 19 Stenson, who was crowned FedEx Cup champion back in 2013, will not be competing in New Jersey.

Sweden’s number two has suffered a recurrence of the elbow injury that forced him to miss the Scottish Open this year and he has decided to skip The Northern Trust in order to fully recover from the issue.

The 42-year-old’s absence not only impacts his chances of winning the FedEx Cup, but it also severely hampers his chances of automatically qualifying for Europe’s 2018 Ryder Cup team.

Stenson, who sits 16th in both the European and World Points Lists, only has two tournaments left before the top eight are finalised and captain Thomas Bjorn announces his four wildcard picks.

The 2016 Open champion does have good Ryder Cup experience, having ended up on the winning side twice from his four appearances, and he will be hopeful of making a fifth outing at Le Golf National.
