Stephens Happy Despite US Open Exit

Sloane Stephens says she is happy with her performances at the US Open despite losing to Anastasija Sevastova in the quarter-finals. The defending champion is out at Flushing Meadows as she struggled in the heat, hitting 27 unforced errors in the 6-2 6-3 defeat against her Latvian opponent.

Even so, Stephens has no complaints and preferred to take the positives out of her performances on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“The fact that I made it to the quarter-finals, played some really good matches and I competed as hard as I could, means I have a lot to be proud of,” she said.

“Defending a title is very hard, very difficult. If you were defending, you’d be playing the same exact people all over again, which I didn’t.

“I’m not going to dwell on it. Just keep building. There’s four more tournaments left. I’m just going to try to play the rest of the season as hard as I can and hopefully have some more good results.”

Meanwhile, Sevastova, who will make a grand slam semi-final for the first time in her career, was delighted to battle through.

“I think it was very physical today and tough to play,” she said. “It was so hot in the stadium. I just kept fighting.”
