Jamie Sterry has admitted he was frustrated to miss out on a place in the Newcastle squad to face Cardiff but hopes for a chance soon. The right-back was not part of Rafa Benitez’s match-day squad for the 0-0 draw against the Bluebirds on Saturday, even though DeAndre Yedlin was absent through injury.
Benitez opted to start with Javi Manquillo, while Isaac Hayden was on the bench at the Cardiff City Stadium to leave Sterry kicking his heels.
However, Manquillo was forced off injured at half-time before Hayden was sent off in the second half after replacing the Spaniard – so Sterry could be in line for some action this weekend against Chelsea.
Sterry wanted to be involved against Cardiff and believes he’s good enough to be given a chance.
“I feel like I’m good enough and last weekend I felt like I could have had a chance, so it was a bit disappointing,” he told the Newcastle website.
“But you’ve got to keep your mental strength really high and try to be positive about it.
“All I can do is give 100 per cent, and I asked to play in the game because I want to play football and show everyone what I can do.”
